The most common mistake this time of year is fishing to deep. As for bait garlic are plain chicken livers ( I put about half of a container of garlic salt on mine. the salt toughens up the livers and garlic just adds smell) Cut baits like larger minnows, shad, herring and blue gills. Live bait for flatheads like shad, herring and bluegills. Check your local laws before using live and cut baits though some states do not allow that.

This answer is a bit hard to answer because I don't know what kind of catfish you are fishing for so I will assume you are going after channel catfish. For channel cats I prefer a size 1/0 hook octopus style, because it gives the best hook up ratio for me. As for the topic of bait, channel cats will eat almost anything. For larger channel cats (7lb+) I would use cut bait (usually creek chubs but really any fish will work). For smaller fish I would use a size 2 hook baited with either liver or hot dog. I prefer hot dog because it is less messy and it performes almost as well as the liver. Unfortunatly I don't have a boat so I do all my fishing off the shore. I have found that catfish congregate perpendicular to cover. I f it during the day, cast out pretty far into the lake and if is dusk/night you can stay closer to the shore. Hope this helps!

This time of year you may want to fish some of the shallower bays. A thermocline will set up in the lake and the water will be void of oxygen below this level, so fish will not use these areas. I have been having luck recently using chicken livers before dark.

catfish bite the best right before or right when it gets dark. chicken livers are usually what i use. the morning before you go fishing, take a can of dog food and cut a couple small holes in the top of the can. then throw it in the lake near the spot that you want to fish. the fish can smell it and they flock!
