it was not funny at all. i agree with the article you posted, and I have been told the part where they were walking over him to go to church was edited like that it didn't really happen. i don't know why they couldn't discern that he was just making fun, but i wasn't there and who am i to judge. (i guess shame on the preacher for not being a cynic and for feeling compassion for a complete stranger- that is sarcasm if you can't tell) I do know Bro. Godwin, the man that was talking to him, and I love and appreciate him. He is a great man of God and he preaches at our church quite a lot. I can't believe any "christian" could watch that and think it is funny. I am pentecostal, but if it had happened at a Baptist church I would feel the same disgust about it.

I think Borat is a bored little boy who just got out of school for Christmas holiday. His intellect is certainly not advanced enough to even call him an adult. I want Peace and Good Will on GWS for Christmas. EDIT @ kubebe: I hope you get that guitar!

Brother, I am amazed at the blasphemy I see even in R&S.
When I was at my worse, I wouldn't even take a drink of beer in front of a church while driving by it.
I knew that building wasn't holy , but I knew Gods people met there.
When you read the Parable of the Wheat and Tares in Matthew 13 toward the end of the chapter He(Jesus) explains the parable.
Those who are reading this that have ears to hear, listen!
The tares were the weeds in the garden of God, they lived among the wheat. They are the ones that say, "oh, there's nothing wrong with watching Borat," Oh, there's nothing wrong with having sex before marriage, every bodies doing it."
"Oh, get off your soap box and have a little fun."Have you ever fellow shipped with these weeds in your church? I have!
All of you who attend church that are reading this, are you a weed, or profitable fruit for Gods kingdom?

It is funny because it is offensive. The Country is angry and it is reflected in the media. Comedy helps to realize anger. So by making fun of everyone like they did in borat the media (aka the Disney corporation) , helps to fear monger for the government, because fear flues consumerism and help boost their pocket books.

It is a great moment in satire. Here is this man sleeping on the footpath, looking destitute, with 'Christians' happily stepping over him to enter their place of worship! The point is that the scene captures their natural response to such individuals, not a scripted one because they are aware of being on camera.
What makes it funnier still is that while they are prepared to pray over him, none appear to even consider offering any material aid. Borat isn't making a mockery of Christian belief, but he is most certainly satirising the hypocrisy of most Christians, which this scene does particularly well.
It also shows, unlike your suggestion, that the notion of 'discerning the spirit' is complete nonsense. The most commonsense response would have been to offer him some meaningful Christian charity, rather than walk over him, or pray over him, which is useless to someone in need of material assistance.

The actor who developed this character is very funny. The character is hilarious. I thought I wouldn't like the humour, because sometimes I can be trying so hard to be politcally correct that I forget to laugh.
He portrays a character with ideals that we all love to hate, but does it in a way that yes, can be offensive to some people, but on the other hand can be very enlightening as well.
I love satirical humour.

Sasha Baron Cohen is hilarious, his humor hits on a very deep layer that many can't quite find. A lot of it is subtle, prodding humor basically satiring the whole of the United-States mentality. And if you think it's offensive, well, good for you. But humor is humor, and we can and should all--every one of us laugh at ourselves from time to time, because we do believe, do, think, and say stupid things quite frequently. If that offends you, well I'm sorry, but crawl out from under your bed and enjoy life a little.

He just goes a few steps further than he does in his Ali G Show.
He pokes fun at anything and everything and neither reveres nor respects anything.
My kinda guy. :)
