The Marines are the second best branch of the American military, after the Navy.
I don't know much about the current state of the French military, but the Foreign Legion has a long and storied history.
BTW. The Gestapo was not a military branch, but the secret police of Nazi Germany.

The French Foreign Legion is part of the French Military Forces, it is the same as any other French military branch and is not immune from the law of the French Republic.
You sign on for five year contracts, are very tough on discipline and have a very Honorable record.
If you desert from the Legion taking your weapon it is possible you would be fired upon if you do not surrender, if you just desert then you are subject to arrest if you ever set foot on French soil anytime after for the rest of your life.
What you obviously heard was crap, there is no comparison between the US Marines and the French Military.

The Legion is a very tough fighting force, if by that you mean worse, then you are right, they are tough. I don't think the French Foreign Legion would still be around if they killed all of their non-hackers. Forces like the Marines and Legion makes a big difference in how a battle will end.

The French Foreign Legion (French: Légion étrangère) is a unique elite unit within the French Army established in 1831. It was created as a unit for foreign volunteers, because foreigners were forbidden to enlist in the French Army after the July Revolution in 1830.
The French Foreign Legion is known to be an elite military unit whose training focuses not only on traditional military skills, but also on the building of a strong “esprit de corps” amongst members. As its men come from different countries with different cultures, this is a widely accepted solution to strengthen them enough to work as a team. Consequently, training is often described as not only physically hard, but also extremely psychologically stressful.

Most will agree that the French Foreign Legion the second best trained fighting force in the world, after the U.S. Navy Seal.
It is worth noting, however, that the U.S. Marine isn't far behind the French Foreign Legion.

I think the FFL was created to perform a mercenary job as what the French government want. Those who join were strip off of their identity. There real identity were concealed and as if they never exist , but they do have a pseudo names to hide and to protect their true activities.
Maybe they have done such killings but due to their nature of job as mercenaries, we could not prove if they do it.
As for myself. There are killings perpetrated by the FFL but i can't find any hard documents to prove it.
I will conduct a research on this matter to prove that the FFL are doing it before.
