An airplane needs various things for a flight....

The most important thing is lift...It is something that keeps the airplane in the air....
Lift is decided by the aerodynamics of the airplane....
Aerodynamics means the air that can pass around the design....
So, it is decided by the design.
Even a dent on an airplane can cause it to crash as it does not allow the air to flow fluently.
The airplane design is decided so that the air flows faster from top of the airplane than the bottom of the airplane. So, pressure is created on top of the airplane and the plane is pulled from the upward direction. There are provisions to make the air flow slower from the top for descending...

Another important thing is the thrust...
Due to this the air flows faster and faster from above the airplane...

The things that hamper flying are drag and _______ I forgot the name.....

Drag is created, again by air....it is friction and the force by which the air hits the plane....
