well i do it because i want to be mischievous. sometimes i use it as an alternative to 'thumbs up'. Or i also use it to get people to co-operate in a prank without others knowing about it. or to say 'your cute'
In your case i think its a 'thumbs up' , 'nudge nudge' , 'wink wink' gesture.

You know what, when i sent message, email i usually add the wink cause it my stamp. So when i do it, it don't mean i'm flirting around w/ guy or anyone but it just way to picture someone say bye. ;)
