Toney's a tough cat and very tricky to hit clean on, and for this reason, even against someone as relentless as Hagler, I don't see him getting stopped. Toney was also pretty inconsistent at 160.

Hagler by unanimous decision, probably 10-5 on rounds. His brilliant right jab (the same punch that gave Toney lots of problems against Reggie Johnson in addition to the left that dropped him) would be key.

The blogbaba is going to go against popular opinion on this one, but I don't see Hagler beating James Toney. Toney had the chin to win a portion of the heavyweight title, and was a 9 time multiweight champion who went 24 rounds with Samuel Peters, one of today's hardest hitting heavyweight's. Hagler was a great middleweight, one of the best but like Ray Robinson, I think Marvin would have had trouble moving up in weight. James was a gifted boxer, and I think he would have had the skill to offset Hagler's aggression. James would have out boxed Marvin and Toney's chin would have made counter punching effective enough to give the bigger Toney the advantage.

James Toney by decision.

I truly believe Marvin Hagler would have ko'd James Toney in the latter rounds. I know Toney is known for taking a great punch, but Hagler would have been to much to handle. Do not get me wrong, it would have been a great fight to say the least. I just don't believe Toney would have kept up with Hagler in his prime and his will to win! Just sit and watch the young Hagler methodically dismantle his opponents, Hearns, John the beast, etc.

People only remember Hagler the brutalizer. But he had all the tools, just chose to infight and attack during the later part of his career. He would rely on his skills as a ring technician to win this one. I don't think he'd even hurt Toney, but he'd win a decision by the simple method of "throwing more, landing more".

With hindsight being 20-20, Hagler should have tore in to Sugar Ray Leonard to grab an early lead, then when SRL needed to rally, Hagler could have switched over to scientific boxing. Would have made for a completely different tactical fight.

Prime "Marvelous" vs. Prime "Lights Out"!! Wow!! It would definitely be an awesome fight! As much as I really like Hagler for his toughness and as much as I hate Toney's arrogance, I think Toney would outbox Hagler to a unanimous decision. Toney's defense and counterpunching ability was a perfect style to offset Hagler's aggressiveness.

Hagler at middleweight, Toney at heavyweight.

Hagler in a CLEAR cut unanimous decision win. He'd box Toney from the outside, fight him southpaw and use that stiff right hand jab.
