Are they in a deep sleep or are they dreaming while they are in a coma?

my buddy (who was out for 7 days) said that it was like sleeping. he had a dream, and when he woke up he had no idea that it had been 7 days.

It depends on the severity of the coma and the reason for the coma. People who are in "light" comas tend to be aware of the surroundings, but for some reason the brain denies them the ability to respond to their surroundings. People in 'deep" comas have no awareness what so ever, and brain function is minimal, which usually means that the brain is only concerned with the basic function of breathing and pumping blood, although sometimes it can't do that either. People in comas also don't go through sleep cycles which means the will never reach the REM stage of sleep where dreaming occurs.

Hopefully a hospital or a nursing home if the coma is prolonged.

Some people say they can hear and know some things going on around them.

A coma is part of the brain shutting down. There are other parts working. So some parts may have the patient still smell, or hear. But they cannot communicate to tell anyone.

those are things that healthy people do, and people in comas aren't healthy.
