Some do it for those who cannot be there for the funeral. For some people, it is closure.
When my cousin died, I know my father took pictures for my brother since he couldn't make it. My brother didn't necessarily need it, but that was what my father needed to do so he could feel like he was reaching out.

I agree. My sister would agree with you even more. She only attends a funeral to be supportive to the living people there. She believes it is wrong to even look at the deceased. She thinks they should only be remembered as they were when alive. However she does not act disgusted with the rest of us, because it is important to let others do it the way they see best. Also an added tip- The reason you hear the phrase, "Doesn't he look nice?" is something you can only understand if you saw the way they looked before they put makeup on them such.

My friends sister died last year in a car accident. She died the night before her 16th birthday. Her casket was white and they let everyone sign her it with the different color sharpies. All of her friends from school, family etc. Hearing this, it might sound tacky but it was really cool considering the conditions in which she died. No one expected it and couldn't predict they would never get to say goodbye and this gave them that sense of the final goodbye. I've seen numerous pictures of the casket from her sister. I think it was acceptable to take pictures because, unlike a casket with nothing on it, she wanted to remember what people had to say about her sister and best friend.

Yes, it can be done for closure. My dear Grandpa died in Europe, and my mom is here in Ca. So she could not go to the funeral. They sent over a video taping the funeral, Holy Mass, Village procession, and the visitation altogether.
My mom views it on occasion, and it gives her closure, because I believe she would have felt different if she never received this video.
My grandpa was a great man (R.I.P.) and a village of 500 people turned out. A man in crutches walked 3 miles to church and the cemetery! It was all captured on video. It made me cry to see the love and devotion. Morbid no.
I saw relatives and the 2nd and 3d generation of family on the video, so in one way it was sad he died, but I also saw life progressing forward with love, and memory. My view.

This is a common custom in certain areas of the country. People will make albums of the funeral with pictures of the body. My grandma has a picture of her grandma "laid out" in some living room at her wake. I suppose that they do it for the same reason as other death rituals, to gain comfort. I don't really get it.

Ugh! Pictures at a funeral are so tacky! I've seen it and I find it distasteful. If you must have a picture, then ask for one of the deceased taken while they were alive don't take one of them in the casket!

It serves as a remembrance of the loved one, perhaps. It's a document of an important event in the lives of the person's family and friends.

I've never seen people take pictures at a funeral. That seems really disrespectful. I'm surprised they'd even allow it!

How morbid and tasteless.
We don't have open caskets in the UK thankfully. I couldnt look at a dead body.
Even taking pics of family at a wake is bad taste IMO. I've never seen it happen.
