why do golfers yell 4 when they hit a bad ball? what is the history and why...

It comes from an old army term.

When soilders used to marh in rows the ones behind would call out "beware before" and the soilders leading would fall to the ground so the following soilders could fire over their heads.

Hence now golfers use "fore" to warn players ahead of an approaching gilf ball.

I am so glad you asked this 3 times. I think 4 would have been better. They don't yell four they yell fore--as in things ahead of. So if you are ahead of the person hitting and he thinks he will hit you he yells "fore".

FORE is short for ForeCaddy - the guy who used to go ahead of the group and stand there as a TARGET for the group to shoot at as he stood at the next ideal location to hit from.

If it was on target, you yelled FORE so that he knew to duck and cover.
