My sisters Cats, and my dog because she sheds also. But I could never live without a dog or a cat in my life. Is there anyway I could stop my nose from running and sneezing around them without getting rid of them?!

i am badly allergic to cats and dogs and have 2 cats and 1 dog, i take 20 mg of reactine everyday, i tried claritin and i dont like it, i didnt find it worked well for me, but you have to get the 20mg of reactine perscribed by the doctor, but it is quite expensive, but it is well worth keeping them!

You could try some non-drowsy formula allergy medicines, but these should not be used long term, especially when you can identify your allergen (cat dander, for instance).

You may also want to explore your current home environment. Regardless of how clean you think your home is, dander hides in rugs and bedding, pillows, etc.. so you may want to consider removing rugs, and regularly washing your bedding etc. This is a tough one. I eventually had to give up my cats after 2 years, and have considered getting a cat that has been bread to be "non-allergenic." I've heard they are very expensive though. Meanwhile, there are "hypo-allergenic" breads (posing less of a problem, but not a total solution to those allergic to cats---but most allergic people can tolerate them). Cornish Rex, Devon Rex and Sphinx are claimed to be hypoallergenic and some people with cat allergies can tolerate them

The two Rex breeds have very fine, short, wavy hair. Sphinx have almost no hair. For a reason not fully understood, some people with a cat allergy can tolerate the rex breed of cat although this is not the case for all cat allergy sufferers. It is a theory that the Devon Rex, Cornish Rex and Sphinx coats do not hold as much saliva as other cat breeds. It is also a theory that less hair in the air means less saliva and dander allergens.

It is generally believed that the Rex breed of cat (Devon Rex and Cornish Rex) do not shed hair. However this is not entirely true. Some moult so gradually as to be virtually unnoticeable others shed their coats all at once and go through a period of temporary baldness until their new coat emerges in the autumn.

Good luck!

I was allergic to my cat when I first got her, and I took over-the-counter Claritin (aka loratadine) once a day and it really did the trick for me. It's a little pricey, but it works. If you have no luck trying the various OTC allergy medicines available, there are also prescription remedies you can get from a doctor. I've never tried them myself, but it you have to live with the animals you've got to do something. Good Luck!

Also, vacuum with a hepa filter or allergen filtering bag, and try the Febreeze Allergen Reducer spray. I also love those sticky rolling lint brushes that you peel the layers off of...great for picking shed hairs and dander. Those worked for me as well, plus the Febreeze smells nice (not too strong).

Tell your doctor what you said here and see if he or she can prescribe a good allergy med.

I am the same way... I have 4 cats all of whom I am allergic to.
I used to take Claritin D, and that worked the best. But when I developed high blood pressure, I had to stop taking the Claritin D and just take regular Claritin.

My vet said he is allergic to his cats, but he just takes allergy meds, too. There are good ones over the counter, and good prescription ones, too. I'd say, start with OTC (over the counter) meds... and if they do not work, talk to your doc about it... See what he or she prescribes.
