Hi, I was recently admitted to a fairly prestigious orchestra in my city. I have a seating audition tomorrow, and I keep messing up my piece whenever I play it for anyone--it's fine when I'm practicing, but I get really nervous and mess up even just playing for my parents. How can I avoid getting really nervous and screwing up massively in the audition?????? Help!

First of all, have confidence in yourself and your playing. Visualize yourself playing well in front of the judges. If the audition isn't blind, then DO NOT look at the judges if they're writing stuff down. It's so easy to get distracted in seeing them doing that, so it's not worth the risk. If you slip up, jump right back on the boat. Having a few "regrouping" spots in your music may help. Sometimes, great "saves" can count almost as much as playing the section cleanly.
I would also highly recommend cutting out (or at least cutting down) your sugar and caffience intake that day. The last thing you need is a sugar/caffience rush on top of the nerves...not a good combination. Try to have a fairly balanced diet so that you're niether too hungry or full during the audition. Most of all, have fun and show'em what you've got!
