Epilepsy is more commonly known as a seizure disorder and not as a disease. So, I think the medical community identifies Epilepsy as a disorder. For your second question, this must be a strange coincidence because I recently completed a college course where we discussed Epilepsy and religion (it dealt with a character in a book we were reading). I would highly recommend the Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman. It is one of the best books I have ever read.

I disagree with some of the previous answerers. In other parts of the world, Epilepsy may be viewed as being spiritual in nature. Just because it is not regularly viewed that way in one country does not mean it does not occur. It's a good idea to keep your mind open to more possibilities and other views. The Hmong are a great example of a group of people that view Epilepsy as being spiritual.

It's physiological and not psychological. It is a disorder in the brain... not a spiritual or psychological or emotional problem.

HOWEVER, psychological and emotional problems can have an effect on this disorder.

When I was a senior in high school (1978), I had self-injury tendencies, due to many issues during my childhood... I used to bang my head on the wall when no one was around. This triggered a major seizure disorder in me. Now, at the time, I had not thought about my "Head banging" when they asked if I had had a blow to the head recently.

I spent a week in the hospital after my first seizure. All kinds of tests were run (to rule out a tumor) and, the brain activity on the eeg, according to the docs, indicated that I had a form of epilepsy... and that something triggered it into action, though they didn't know what.

It was controlled by Dilantin for about 3 and a half years... then I was slowly weaned off that med. Haven't had a single seizure since.

The term Epilepsy is not used anymore by doctors. The term is now Seizure Disorder. This is because it is now known that there can be more that one medical reason for a person having seizures.

There is no spiritual element in it. It is purely a physical, medical problem. You might just as well ask if there is a spiritual element involved when you break a leg.

The ancient Greeks and Romans thought that having seizures was a "gift of the gods". I wonder if that is what you were thinking of. As a RN who has had patients who had seizure disorders, let me tell you, having a seizure disorder is not a gift!

EPILEPSY DEFINITION:-
Any of various neurological disorders characterized by sudden recurring attacks of motor, sensory, or psychic malfunction with or without loss of consciousness or convulsive seizures.

In British Columbia, from 1969 to 1996, the incidence was approximately 40 cases per 100,000 live births, including diseases of amino acids, organic acids, the urea cycle, galactosemia, primary lactic acidoses, glycogen storage, and lysosomal storage and diseases specifically involving peroxisomal and mitochondrial respiratory chain dysfunction.69 Symptoms and signs occur when pathway intermediates proximal to the enzymatic block accumulate to toxic levels, or they result from deficient products of the affected metabolic pathways. Most inborn errors of metabolism present with progressive neurologic and systemic symptoms. Seizures often begin in the neonatal period or during infancy. See Table: Metabolic Disorders of Infantile Seizures for a list of metabolic disorders associated with infantile seizures.

We all have some negative karma from previous lives that we have to work off. Epilepsy is supposed to be associated with improperly using people sexually in a previous life.
