Do Buddhists believe in a creator god?

No, we do not. There are several logical reasons for this. The Buddha, like modern scientists, sociologists and psychologists, believed that religious ideas and especially the god idea have their origins in fear. The Buddha says:

"Gripped by fear men go to sacred mountains, sacred groves, sacred trees and shrines." *Dhammpada 188

Primitive man found himself in a dangerous and hostile world, the fear of wild animals, of not being able to find enough food, of injury or disease, and of natural phenomena like thunder, lightning and volcanoes was constantly with him. Finding no security, he created the idea of god in order to give him comfort in good times, courage in times of danger and consolation when things went wrong. To this day, you will notice that people become more religious at times of crises, you will hear them say that the belief in a god gives them the strength they need to deal with life. You will hear them explain that they believe in god because they prayed in time of need and their prayer was answered. All this seems to support the Buddha’s teaching that the god-idea is a response to fear and frustration. The Buddha taught us to try to understand our fears, to lessen our desires and to calmly and courageously accept the things we cannot change. He replaced fear, not with irrational belief but with rational understanding.

The second reason the Buddha did not believe in a creator god is because there does not seem to be any evidence to support this idea. There are numerous religions, all claiming that they alone have god’s words preserved in their holy book, that they alone understand god’s nature, that their god exists and that the gods of other religions do not. Some claim that god is masculine, some that she is feminine and others that it is neuter. They are all satisfied that there is ample evidence to prove the existence of their god but they laugh in disbelief at the evidence other religions use to prove the existence of another god. It is not surprising that with so many different religions spending so many centuries trying to prove the existence of their gods that still no real, concrete, substantial or irrefutable evidence has been found. Buddhists suspend judgement until such evidence is forthcoming.

The third reason the Buddha did not believe in a creator god is that the belief is not necessary. Some claim that the belief in a god is necessary in order to explain the origin of the universe. But this is not so. Science has very convincingly explained how the universe came into being without having to introduce the god-idea. Some claim that belief in god is necessary to have a happy, meaningful life. Again we can see that this is not so. There are millions of Atheists, free-thinkers and Buddhists, who live useful, happy and meaningful lives without belief in a creator god. Some claim that belief in god’s power is necessary because humans, being weak, do not have the strength to help themselves. Once again, the evidence indicates the opposite. One often hears of people who have overcome great disabilities and handicaps, enormous odds and difficulties through their own inner resources, through their own efforts and without belief in a god. Some claim that god is necessary in order to give man salvation. But this argument only holds good if you accept the theological concept of salvation and Buddhists do not accept such a concept. Based on his own experience, the Buddha saw that each human being had the capacity to purify the mind, develop infinite love and compassion and perfect understanding. He shifted attention from the heavens to the heart and encouraged us to find solutions to our problems through self-understanding.

But if there is no creator god how did the universe get here?

All religions have myths and stories which attempt to answer this question. In ancient times, when man simply did not know, such myths were adequate, but in the 20th century, in the age of physics, astronomy and geology, such myths have been superseded by scientific fact. Science has explained the origin of the universe without recourse to the god-idea.

That's the funny thing, isn't it? The affirmative side of an argument is the one that needs to provide proof...! (But where is it?)

Anyway. Thoughts:

I'm no evolutionary biologist, but your "lots" of evidence theory I agree with. The fact that there are fossils and trails throughout history of our ancestry is good stuff. However, in arguing against it, the links and the explanations for evolution may be a bit sketchy... but the evidence is still there! How is one to argue against that? Especially when there is no (tangible) evidence for the existence of a god. (That I have found - please expound on your ideas, I'd love to hear!)

This is, however, a maddening debate - a god, or evolution? I have a bone to pick. Why does it always seem evolution is constantly underneath the microscope, and the notion of a god runs scot-free?! And since it is a touchy subject, it is not thoroughly covered in schools (If I may say, however, neither is the significance of religion), and consequently, people do not know enough about what supports the theory of evolution, and what type of evidence stands behind it. What you end up with is a bunch of unqualified people lending completely uninformed opinions on a question that is really quite good, and deserves unbiased and informed attention.

yes. Anyway, I did a sort of mini paper on this once, asking people what they thought. And they argue that god doesn't need proof... Not true. Every single idea, machine, thought, argument, has some rationality behind it in order to explain it. Why is the idea of a god an exception? But what is god a part of? He's part of a religion, of a FAITH. So people who believe have faith that their ideas are true - they never take the time to question them, because their faith tells them not to. Convenient, huh?

So evidence of evolution... yes. Evidence of a god... (tangible)... no.

lol. That's what I've come up with so far... :)

Depends largely what one defines as being PROOF. What the base definitions that one is using? What is God?---a person has to have such a definiton to be able to look for it. What manifestations are allowable or not?

A historical concept of god was based upon what people couldn't define. Without the benefit of sciences to explain things, these things became god(s) or the manifestations of god(s). Examples: Where did we come from? What happens after we die? Why does it rain? Why when the plagues hit did some people die and others didn't?

In many ways, one could say that the sciences are defining/ explaining god. Granted, many questions have not yet been able to defined by the sciences but give humans time. There are so many more WHYs to be asked and things to be seen from different angles.

One also need keep in mind that the concepts of God are based upon FAITH. Faith is holding to a concept or definition WITHOUT evidence or proof.

Concepts of faith can be helpful. Like giving comfort or strength during trying times, HOPE when the odds are stacked against ya, or inspiration to do many of the 'impossible' things that have become possible.

On the flip side though, Faith has also been used to justify any horrible things. Examples killing those that don't bow to your faith, enslaving others, burning libraries/books, etc.

First of all there really isn't any proof of evolution. No one knows because no one was there. Personally I watch human life develope and the wonders of the world around me and refuse to believe that this beauty came from some freaky accident. If we evolved from apes then why are there still apes? Christians have faith-that's what it's all about. I believe the bible to be the truth not some scientist coming up with different ideas so that he/she can capitalize on it. It's no wonder we live in a world full of depression and anxiety when they feel that they were evolved from a smelly and hairy creature. That thought would make me not want to get out of bed in the morning, too. We are all part of God's plan and He knew us before we were put here on earth. Doesn't that make you feel more special?

Actually, properly interpreted, the evidence of Earth's history indicates a young Earth and so a sudden ex-nilo creation, thus God.

'Evolution Theory' is a religion of conspiracy developed not to interpret evidence with an open mind, but specifically to interpret evidence to intentionally exclude God.

Life. The complexity of every living thing is evidence of God. The possibility of evolution of such complex organisms is impossible. One of the major principles of evolution is simplicity and conservation; so what is more simple in life than a single cell?

The whole universe is evidence of God. How is it that a single atom and our solar system have a similar pattern and function? (Hint the electrons that orbit around the nucleus and planets that orbit around the sun.)

There is no evidence for evolution at all, but the evidence of God's Creation is in your face every day and everywhere. If you have eyes to see, don't you see the heaven and the ocean and the mountains, who do you think put them there ???

God is so evident in everything we see all around us (and within us). Personally I find it much more difficult to believe that we somehow developed into the insanely complex beings that we are from ancient beginnings in a pot of primordial soup. As a designer myself, it seems very logical that a Designer (God) designed and created us and all we see.
The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament shows His handiwork. (Psalm 19:1)

Admittedly, it is hard for us humans to wrap our brains around a God Who is so powerful that He can create everything we know. But that is because we are finite, limited in what we are capable of understanding. Our inability to understand or accept a principle, however, does not void its truth.

none. Some people will attempt to answer this by saying that nature is evidence of god. It isn't. Nature is nature, it doesn't mean that any deity put nature there. However nature and the mountains and the trees and all of it came about is a mystery. It doesn't mean that any god of our understanding put it the way it is, and it sure as hell doesn't mean that it is the way it is bc some god who hung his only begotten son to die on any cross put it there.

The two are not connected. Christians don't see it that way, but with all due respect to other people's beliefs, there is no evidence connecting nature with some omnipotent god that people have created due to their fear of death.

they're the two unfounded incredibly. a pair corrections for my theists pals: There are historic texts and memories approximately leprechauns and assorted different fairies and monsters of fable that predate the Bible. and A fake concept may be very well-known, that doesn't make it properly suited. That good judgment is improper. many people have believed that demons brought about ailment quite than germs, that vampires have been genuine, the Earth replaced into flat and that slavery replaced into A-ok. They have been at one time a majority yet have been all incorrect, only like theists.

The evidence of god is that which you find inside yourself. God is in our DNA, he is part of our evolution as human beings, we would not be who we are without god.
