Planning a trip to Beijing in early September. I would like to visit the wall. Can anyone recommend a good spot (less tourists and good views)? Also from staying downtown any recommendations on how to get there?

Having lived in China for a few years, I would recommend that if you are travelling with someone that you rent a taxi to take you to the wall. It is relatively inexpensive and they often know of the areas less travelled. However, if you are travelling alone, this is probably not the best choice. There are many cab drivers around the area of the Tian men square and they are always willing to take tourists out to the site. It is quite a distance from the city of Beijing, so be prepared for it to cost you more if you are taking a taxi. Also, many hotels can arrange the trip out there as well. They have tour busses that run frequently, however, you are at the mercy of the tour and this type of trip would be to the popular destinations along the wall...
A beautiful thing to see... highly recommended... take great hiking boots or comfy walking shoes.

Badaling. The most commonly visited spot. Rebuilt for tourists and usually heaving with people. Avoid.
Mutianyu. Also rebuilt for tourism but more peaceful. Take public bus from Dongzhimen to Huairou then find a driver to take you to the wall.
Huanghua. The "Wild Wall", once a piece of original wall you could enjoy in solitude, more recently damaged by too much tourism and not so enjoyable due to villagers pestering tourists for money. Access from Huairou or take one of three public buses a day direct from Dongzhimen.
Simatai. My personal favourite. The wall here is managed for tourism but it is still in original condition and there aren't too many visitors. Competes with Huanghua for the most stunning views. Take public bus from Dongzhimen to Miyun then find a driver (maybe 100-150 return).

I really like China, I'm going to study abroad next year and I'm planning to find a great stop to walk on without there being a whole lot of tourists.

I just got back. I rented a guide who showed up with a driver and cost about $85 for the day. We went to the section farthest away from Beijing. It was not crowded and was beautiful. E-mail me and I will send pics to you. It was also the best preserved according to my guidel I am glad you are going. It is so great!
