My guess would be that it has a few more days after the sell-by date. You are single like me, right? When you get a store bought cake, freeze separate pieces. Cover them real well - or cut them so that they will fit in zip-locks and then freeze them. When you want a piece, grab it out of the freezer and then let it sit for about ten minutes (or you might even like it frozen). Did someone get you a cake for your birthday? I hope so. Your birthday is soon right, or is it now?

Happy birthday even if I am off by a few days.

Depending on how moist it still is, you should be able to keep it for at least a few days after the sell by date. I would refrigerate it though. You could also freeze it for longer term storage.

nope! thankfully food is edible after the sell by date.

I had some yogurt that expired WAY before the sellby date and I was ticked off. it was so bad that i tried to eat it, but couldn't.

the cake is good until it starts to taste or smell weird. then don't bother! But if it looks alright and tastes and smells ok, then no problem!

A sell-by date is simply the longest the product will be at its prime. After that it starts going downhill... Depending on what it is,, it can be fine up to a week after that.
