One of the employees at the gym I go to is really annoying and likes to talk to me for some reason. I don't want to sound rude because I go to this gym frequently and see this person almost everyday. I don't want to change gyms or anything like that but what should I do??

just say kindly, i enjoy talking to you, but the gym is my sanctuary, a time for peace and reflection, if you feel like being upfront.

or you can just kind of say everyday, well i've gotta get my workout in quickly so i can get home to the kids...they will catch on after a couple days of that.

First of all, you are not responsible for this person's feelings. Everyone has a different level of sensitivity. You could be polite as could be and still offend or be very rude and the other person doesn't flinch. Now, to your question. Be direct. Address the action that bothers you and not the character of the individual. You could say something like, "Excuse me, but I'd like to concentrate on my workout." If confronting the individual is too uncomfortable then you could talk to the supervisor. He/she could then make a general comment to the employee. Who knows? Maybe their are other patrons who feel the same way you do.

You're going to find this situation from time-to-time in life, at work, at social functions, in your neighborhood. Now's a good time to practise this skill, because it's going to come in handy. Be pleasant, but focused on your gym work. When they start to talk to you say, "gotta get some more reps in" or "I'm gonna hit it now". Whatever little pleasant but non-committal statement you can make. But make it while you are moving away from them and toward a machine. Don't give them a choice of continuing the conversation. Tactfully getting rid of someone is easier than it seems at first. GL

If they talk to you while you are trying to work out, it's fine to say that you have trouble working out and talking at the same time. If it's before or after the workout, just interupt and say something pleasant like, "See you next time, got to go" or "I need to do more crunches, less chatting!"

Start wearing headphones and pretend you don't see them and be all intense in your workout. Hopefully they'll see that you are in your zone. If they continue to bother you, don't add anything to the conversation - keep it brief and short. Move to another machine, anything to get away from the person. Eventually they should get the hint.

Try not to answer every question he/she says, try not to agree on every argument he/she starts, and lastly DO NOT start a conversation with him/her, let him/her go first.

Put your head phones on, have them handy when you walk in.... Say your hellos and let him/her know you are hard pressed for time politely... Then put those babies on and get your bum moving...
