And on the Mall you'll find the various museums: the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the American History Museum. Stop by the Capitol, too. And go visit your local Congressman's office. They're glad to see constituents even if you didn't vote for him or her, and they'll give you gallery tickets to go watch Congress in session. None of this requires an admission charge.
It's also worth going inside the Washington Monument--not to look out, but to see all the inscriptions on the stones that the various spooky fraternal organizations placed there in exchange for contributing money to the project. One look in there and you'll learn why we had a civil war.
Hike to the Library of Congress, too. And if you have any special interests related to your job or profession, there's probably the office of a lobby group headquartered there:e.g., if you sell paint for a living, there's a Paint and Coatings Association. Go visit.
And the National Archives, too.

I usually give the same answer - adjust it according to your taste. 5 things.
1. Go to the mall and see the monuments and memorials. That's likely why you came to Washington, DC, and it's great. A great walk is from the Washington Monument down the mall to Lincoln memorial, passing WW II Memorial, Vietnam Veteran's memorial, Korean War Memorial, then turn toward the Tidal basin and walk around visiting the FDR memorial and the Jefferson memorial.
2. Get thee to a museum. There are dozens of museums in DC, many of them free. You can visit the Smithsonian, and I recommend highly any of their museums, but especially the Air and Space Museum, the Natural History Museum, the American Indian Museum. The National Gallery of Art is also first rate, especially the East Building, built by IM Pei. Other non-smithsonian museums of note include the Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Spy Museum and the Corcoran.
3. See your government in action - especially if you are American, visit the Capitol, the Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, the National Archives. This is the capitol of the US, enjoy that history.
4. Get to some of the great nightlife of the city. Go to Adams Morgan for live music at Madam's Organ, or clubbing at Heaven and Hell, or to Old Town Alexandria for bluegrass at Tiffany Tavern, or to U Street for Jazz at Bohemian Caverns. Go to the Kennedy Center for a tour and then an absolutely free concert in the Millennium Stage at 6PM Every day. Get to one of the theatres in the city, several along 7th street, Wooley Mammoth, Shakespeare Theatre, or to Arena Stage along the Southwest Waterfront.
5. Visit DC's neighborhoods. Go to Georgetown for history, Adams Morgan for Diversity, Shaw/U Street for a the former Black Broadway, Chinatown for the influx of german then chinese immigration. These are thriving neighborhoods that make DC more than just the capitol of the US but a real thriving city.

there are many museums in D.C and they are mostly free
in other states you would have to pay a lot
