Bravo, Thejanith. I'm with you on this one...

I can't believe you asked this question, even if you are not English you should still know the answer. I think you need to do some homework, study some history.

To Jean C:
"Perhaps Americans are the only people to speak English, if not the first."
You must be joking!! And just what do you think we speak on the other side of the U.S. border? And what about Australia, and Scotland and Ireland and .....

The accent may be different but it's English!

Well, the British were speaking English when "true" Americans were speaking tribal languages...so the English are the first..

But hold on. We use words like "got" and we use the concept of "y'all" as the old English used "you"

Now in England, everyone says you and you.. and not ye and you. You could say that we have more in common with that. There are numerous words that we have maintained that the Brits have lost...no one should loose sight of that.

What?! Don't you realize one country isn't yet 250 years old, while the other goes back at least a thousand or more? English is what the settlers spoke at home before setting sail for the New Land, which eventually became America.

Consider that Queen Victoria was mostly German in ethnicity. Her husband and first cousin, Prince Albert, was 100% German.
The British aristocracy, in order not to offend Albert, began to imitate his accent. Thus was the current British accent born.
Now all of the English people speak English with a German accent.
Before you write your nasty replies, please research this matter and you will find that I am right. (Then you can write your nasty replies)
Perhaps Americans are the only people to speak English, if not the first.
