I have my surround sound system, cable box, HDTV and new upscaling DVD player hooked up to an old, high quality analog amplifier with no HDMI hookups.

I'm not an audio expert...but I know what I hear. The difference between analog and digital sound is like night and day...or AM and FM. Digital is vastly better, especially if you are watching a movie with DTS sound! You can actually pick up distinct sounds from each speaker, whereas with analog connections, pretty much the same sound will come out of all the speakers. Digital is much more crisp and pronounced. If you have HDTV and a surround system already, you are selling yourself short by not getting a newer digital receiver/amplifier.

There are people that go back to vinyl and tubes. There is something to that. In the progress made in technology there have been some sacrifices made in quality. The major advantage to today's equipment is the recording quality (digital stability, freq. response and dynamic range). But also surround has been added. Can't get that from the old stuff. Playback quality though takes a lot to equal the good older systems.

Hi there. Whether a Home Theater Amplifier is digital or not does not matter. It is the quality of the signal that is important.Digital does not always imply better sound quality than analogue.If you like the sound of your present amplifier,then that is all that matters.Unless you want to change it to another amplifier with similar qualities of your present amplifier.
