G'day,
Melbourne!!!! Where should I start?
1. First of all... some people do not like the weather in Melbourne (you can have 4 seasons in one day). However, if you read the first article from The Age newspaper, you will find out that the weather is still more preferable than the other cities. Sure you can have 42C day in summer, but almost immediately you'll get a much cooler weather pretty soon afterwards. It is very rarely that you got 2 or 3 consecutive days of hot weathers (unlike Sydney, Brisbane or Perth).
2. Melbourne is a city of diversity. If you are a newcomer, and you do not look 'Anglo-Saxon', you do not feel like an 'alien', since you can find almost every race in the world walking in the city. They are both immigrants and overseas students.
3. THE FOOD!! Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Thai, All-you-can-eat, African, Lebanese, Mexican, Sea Food... anything else? All available and lots of them in a very-very-very affordable price
4. Pretty good public transport system. With one ticket, you can switch from train, tram and bus. They do not always come on-time, but still reliable and improving (www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au).
5. SHOPPING!!! Original branded clothing sold very cheap. There are even shopping tour, where the participants are taken to retails outlets just for shopping. Big temptations for ladies.
6. Crime rates... just read the second article on the bottom.
7. Tourist attraction. This is the area that I think Sydney is better than Melbourne, since it has most of it's attraction within its suburbs. Most Melbourne attraction are pretty much out of Melbourne, such as the gold mines in the cities of Bendigo and Ballarat, The Great Ocean Road, Lakes Entrance, Grampians, skiing in Mt. Buller etc. You can check the last link for Melbourne's attractions.
Hope this helps. Have a good trip and welcome to Australia :)

Sydney is NOT the capital of Australia.
Melbourne has beaches (albeit a bigger distance from the city centre) and they are a lot less polluted than those around Sydney.
The weather in Sydney is not necessarily better - in fact, they actually get more rain than Melbourne overall.
Sydney is great - if you love the water and an upmarket urban feel - lots to see and do, and don't mind spending money it's the place to be.
Melbourne for food, clubbing, culture. Neither is better - just different. If you love New York and don't much care if people are friendly, you'll probably like Sydney.
If you like Seattle or Chicago - Melbourne may be more to your taste.

melbourne all the way. less of a rat-race as sydney, but still has everything you'd expect from a city. beautiful along south bank in the heart of the city. very multicultural. best shopping too. there is also the rialto tower which is cool and public transport is pretty good with all the trains and trams.
go to melbourne!

If you love sailing then def SYdney. Bands/dining out prob Melbourne. Sydney's climate is by far the better. Right now 22degrees and still winter. COme summer it will still only avg around 29. Melbourne has no beaches whereas SYdney has plenty.
Depends what you like? Don;t come to sydney in early september, we have an APEC meeting which has shut down the city for about a week.
Try posting the types of things you would like to do, Sydney has SCG, Telstra stadium and Aussie stadium and nine local footy teams whereas Melbourne only has the one (Melbourne Storm) but if you don't follow our footy codes then this probably means nothing.

Hey there Les Bulles. Murganator is a genius and absolutely correct. Melbourne has the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) and 9 Australian Football League teams in the suburbs. Sydney has the SCG (Sydney Cricket Ground) and only one team, the Swans. The MCG is a palace, the SCG is run down, not kept up, Swans need to move to Telstra Stadium full time. Been to Melbourne 5 times, Sydney only once. Don't waste your time in NSW. Spend your visit in Victoria.

Sydney is not the capital who ever said that before me - how disgracefull !!!!
anyway melbourne is better - i have visited sydney twice and on both occasions i found the roads to drive on where confusing and i got lost so easy whereas in melb if your driving everything is in blocks and its so easy to find your way around - an easy way to remember the streets King William Queen Elizabeth and from there you can find any street and any location!!!
Melbourne is great !!!!

Melbourne is a planned city, 50 years younger than Sydney with plenty of parks, gardens and open space. Spring is a great time to spend in Melbourne. Sydney has the gorgeous harbour, opera house and bridge, but that's where it ends. Poor town planning makes you feel closed in, surrounded by concrete & glass.

Both cities have great food, great restaurants, great shopping, great nightlife, great entertainment, great sporting events. There are differences, sure, but overall they are much the same. Sydney is older with more history on show. It is more beautiful with the harbour and its hilly terrain and has good beaches, both harbour beaches and surf beaches close to the city.
If you have only a limited time, Sydney is the place to go. It is essentially Australian and offers everything you would expect in a great city. Melbourne is another great city and I have lived there three times and loved it but if you can only get to one of them then Sydney every time.

I like Melbourne (I've never lived there, only visited) because it is easier to get around, and they have the fabulous huge markets which you would need at least a whole day to get around.
