Sounds unbelievable! Is this an American city? Sounds like something a Scandinavian city would do.

Already the subsidies are very high. Ten years ago,in Santa Clara County where I live I did a study of the actual cost of running the light rail and buses per rider per trip.

As I recall the actual cost to the Transportation Agency per trip was approximately $4.50 per trip on the bus and approximately $5.00 per trip on the light rail.

That was 10 years ago. I would expect that the amount of that subsidy has gone up since then.

The charge per trip was a small fraction of that. As I recall full fare was approximately $1.25 per trip for the bus and light rail. It has increased to $1.75 since then. There are a number of discounts for different classes of people and there are monthly passes that people can buy as well.

Essentially the fare structure does not pay for public transit as it is.

I do not see any harm in experimenting with lower fares to see if that will increase ridership, and by how much.

I see many empty seats during the day.

It is not free somebody, probably the tax payer is paying for it. I think it is unfair that some people travel free on public transport for three months of the year then can revert to a more polluting mode of transport. I think it is unfair that others who walk or cycle or car share the whole year are financially paying for you and get no benefit themself. I think it is unfair that people who are not on the public transport route because they live rurally, or who are too physically or mentally disabled do not have access/can not benefit for this scheme.

I think that this is a good step since it would encourage others to use public transit especially with the gas prices now a days (Which I hope keep on rising...and no I am not crazy, except when it comes towards helping others and the world in which we live).

I have lots of info that I think you will find quite helpful and enlightening:

I think thats a great idea, I mean really, they should do that in all cities, that way it would encourage people to start using public transportation more frequently, instead of there cars and huge SUVS, So I give you kudos, and I'm also going to give you a star.... God Bless

i don't think itz goin to stop air pollution.Itz probably goin 2 increase it.if itz free then more n more ppl would wanna travel by the free public transport n then buses n taxis(nt jus them all automobiles in general contribute to air pollution) will give out more heat n amoke n hence air pollution increases.unless they use CNG which r environment friendly.

I think that is great, because where I live, we have no public transportation, free or otherwise, so EVERY person drives his or her car (or more often ridiculously large SUV) everywhere. It not only pollutes but also creates a huge traffic problem.

A bonus for the riders and for people who like to breathe, but maybe not for the taxpayers.
IMHO, a great idea. You get a star.
