Employers in the USA are seriously abusing what used to be a gesture of appreciation. They want to pay their employees less, so they leave it up to the generosity of their customers. One could think of the tip as a hidden fee. That's not what it was meant to be!
I tip for a job well done to better show my appreciation. That's the way it should be. I do not tip when I go to Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts or anyplace else where the person just stands behind the register and takes my order. That would be like tipping the cashier at the grocery store, which would be completely ludicrous. And yet, these places have tip jars! It boggles the mind. It isn't like they're bringing the food to me.
In short, you are very right--tipping is getting out of control. It needs to stop and employers need to start paying their workers a better wage.

Call me a cheap bugger and I won't care.
In my opinion a tip should reflect the service tendered.
If I get average service, I'll tip a couple of bucks. If I get good service, I'll leave about 10-15% of the check. If I get great service, I'll tip 20-25% of the check.
Restaurant owners should pay their employees a fair wage and tips should be at the customer's discression, and be dependant on the level of service.
If I get crummy service, I'll leave a dime, or less. Leaving nothing can be written off as the customer being a cheapskate. The tiny tip indicates displeasure.

Isn't it awful! It seems the whole world expects a tip these days. I've even had people tell long sad stories about how they depend on their tips since they don't get paid a salary, the stand at the door as you're leaving with their hat out to collect money. If feels more like extortion than voluntary tipping.

I don't tip as a rule, I just round the fare or charge up to the nearest $. This is more to not gather coins rather than thanks for the service.
It does annoy me when people state exactly how much each tip should be.

i agree. only people that don't make minimum wage (like restaurant servers, bartenders, etc.) should get tips. i mean i totally get that people in the service industry aren't doing for a hobby, but, hell, i'm a teacher, and i don't make much money either. it's not like someone gives me a tip after a particularly good class. it's called doing your job!
