Get him a female, animals need loving too... It would be a shame if he had to get off like that all of the time....
On a more serious note, many types of birds need companions, and they are one that needs them, when they have a companion they never get another one, they will never ever go and have another companion if the other one dies, and they are needy birds, whether that sounds wierd or not it is true.

It is most likely a sexual urge. Like humans. I suggest purchasing a bird of the opposite sex.

My male budgies do the same thing. Perch, toys, whatever they're comfortable with. Usually they have a favorite, if you remove it, they'll find something else to do it to. It's normal.Also they do it more when it's breeding season like Springtime.
