No, they are too high in water content. They will turn to ice. If flash frozen they are okay, otherwise they turn to soup.

That's what Sandra Lee from Foodnetwork's "Semi Homemade" does, but as a gourmet cook at home, I wouldn't. Unless this philly mix is like some sort of a dip, or cheese mixture, than I would freeze the whole thing together.

I'm not sure what a philly mix is, but frozen onions work just fine in any recipe that you're ultimately going to cook the onions for. In fact, you can now buy frozen chopped onions (and green peppers) at our local groceries.

I find that if I bother to pull out the chopping board and cry over an onion then I only want to do that once. So, when I have an onion I chop it all up. Put it in a ziplock and toss it in the freezer. I have no issues with the consistancy of the thawed onion and it is so convenient to toss it in (omlette, burrito, soup). in addition it gets the onion out of the kitchen and out of the fridge (where it may leach odor onto other foods or dehydrate.

Yes. In fact, I just buy the pre-chopped, frozen ones at Wally World because my eyes are sooooo overly sensitive when I chop onions. I will always use them from now on. I don't care that they cost more than buying a fresh onion - they last because they're frozen and they save tons of time and tears.

When you freeze onions , they will become clear and can only be used in a recipe as you specify. They can't be used to put on say hamburgers. Just chopped or diced seems to work well for most dishes as I have found out. I had a surplus of onions and I had put them in the freezer for about 6 months in a chopped state(various types of chopped lengths) and upon thawing them, they were good for cooking in recipes and tasted good.

Yes, but for the best flavor in your Philly mix freeze each ingredient separately first then place them together that way the flavors do not mix until you cook them. Good Luck!

Yes. You can buy frozen onion and onion and pepper blends at the store. As long as you are going to be cooking them after defrosting them they should be fine. I think they may lose their crunch though, so if you are looking for fresh and crisp...fresh is the way to go.

It changes the flavor. You can try it. My dad actually prefers the taste of frozen onion to fresh raw.

Yes, they do freeze well. We chop them up, freeze them and use them for cooking. You don't have to thaw them, the hot water will cook them.
