Brigadier General - 1 star
Major General - 2 stars
Lieutenant General - 3 stars
General - 4 stars
5 star general rank is reserved only for general of all armies in the theater of operations. The men who were given the 5th star were:
US Army - General Of The Army
George Marshall
Omar Bradley
Dwight D. Eisenhower
Douglas MacArthur
US Air Force - General of The Air Force
Hap Arnold (he was supreme comander of the USAAF, before it became the USAF)
US Navy - Fleet Admiral
Ernest King
Chester Nimitz
There was also the rank of six star General. or General of All Armies; only two men ever held this rank; those men were George Washington and John "Blackjack" Pershing. Eisenhower was offered the sixth star, but he refused it, citing logistics issues involving retirement benefits and seniority within the United States Army.

Brigadier General is 1 star
Major General is 2 stars
Lt General is 3 stars
General is 4 stars
A 5 star General is only used during wartime. There have only been 5 Five star generals in history. General George Washington would have been equivalent to a 5 star General. But the star system was not used back then.

1) Brigadier general
2) Major general
3) Lieutenant general
4) General
Currently, there are no 5-star generals, and haven't been since Happ Arnold and Omar Bradley were presented this rank. I believe they were the last two to hold this rank. General of the army is the name of the 5-star rank, at least for the army, that is.

Army/Air Force/Marines:
One star=brigader general
Two stars=major general
Three stars=lieutenant general
Four stars=general
Five stars=general of the army/airforce
The last five star general was Omar Bradley, Hap Arnold was the only general of the air force (title given to him after he retired from the Army Air Force). There have been no five star Marine generals.
The Navy ranks are:
one star=rear admiral (lower half)
two star=rear admiral (upper half)
three star=vice admiral
four star=admiral
five star=fleet admiral
Chest Nimitz was the last fleet admiral in the US Navy.
I am wondering about claims of a "six star general", considering that there was a controversy when Abraham Lincoln promoted US Grant to the rank of three star, as only George Washington had previously held that rank. Why would Washington be a "six star" if no one else were higher than two star? And Pershing was only a four star general, Marshall was the first five star general. The first five star admiral was William Leahy.
