Mullah made a good point. About the only way you can be sure is to wipe out the hard drive and completely start over. Pick some passwords that are random things, and change them regularly. Also if you have high speed internet, get a router to help act as a firewall. If not, buy a software firewall. Some data (key stroke) loggers are software, and some are hardware. If he can physically get to your computer, he may have added a thing that looks like an adapter, that plugs in line with the keyboard, so look for something like that, or even a hidden camera. There are so many ways out there now to hack, one can't be too careful.

Deletion of account will not stop the hacker if he knows anything. If s/he ends up having your IP (your personal pc address) s/he can still connect when you're online and cause havoc. Also, one can represent her/ himself as you (take your old account) if they know your name and deceive others into believing it's actually the previous user.
I am not an expert, but this has been happening to me. The hacker can monitor what websites you visit, how long time you spend (where), get your contacts e-mail addresses, and the worst one get your bank/ credit card info/ personal info and steal your identity. I don't keep any personal data on pc, such as names/ e-mails etc. but send an e-mail and opt for 'do not save sent' option. You need help from an expert. Look up in yellow pages and ask on Programming area on Y! a and I hope you'll have some help found.
Good antivirus programs:
http://www.kaspersky.com/
http://www.symantec.com/index.jsp - choose one of the 2 as they cannot work simultaneously...
and have an expert clean up your pc and install these.
Good luck...

This has absolutely nothing to do with someone getting access to your computer or on your computer, your yahoo account, and your yahoo email account, are not stored on your computer. Somewhere along the line, she probably went to a website that was owned by him, probably a geocities site, which asked her to put in her user name and password, but this was not a real yahoo site, and instead of logging in to her yahoo account she was giving away her user name and password to this person. It was this, or her password was so easy to figure out, especially since he knows you, that he easily got access to the account. Many people loose accounts because their password is so easy that anyone can figure it out or crack it with a little work. He may have even just known the answer to her security question, and was able to get into it that way. He was never on her computer, he was on her yahoo account. It is very difficult to get actual access to someone else computer, but much easier to to get into their yahoo account if they have a simple security question that this relative could figure out, or the password is so easy that any 2-bit hacker with a password cracking program that runs regular dictionary word lists can get into it. Her contacts list is not stored on the computer either, it is saved to her yahoo account, which is on the yahoo webservers. Her best bet is to use a password that is MUCH more complicated, with a mix of more than one word, capital letters that are not the first letter mixed with lower case letters, numbers mixed into the words or used to replace letters, and symbols. Something like h3Lp/M3/S0meone(St0le)my (it could be shorter than that, this is an example) would be the best form of password you could use, because then no one with a passwrod cracker can get into it. Also, use a security question and answer that he will not know. People who know you would know your pet's name, maiden name, etc.

Edit:
A hacker cannot get access to the personal information on your computer if you use a REAL and reputable antivirus and firewall program like Mcaffee of Norton, and you do not put your personal info into sites that you do not know. FREEWARE ANIVIRUS AND FIREWALL PROGRAMS DO NOT WORK!!!! Any site you put your credit card information etc into HAS to start with https:// and it needs to show the lock symbol on the IE toolbar, this means that it is a secure site that other cannot get access to your information. Puting your information into sites that do not have this, or that are not reputable internet sites is just asking for it. A lot of my personal info, bank records, email addresses, address book etc, are all on my computer, and no one will ever be able to get access to it. Hackers cannot just see that you are typing into a website, and they especially cannot see it when it is a secure site. NEVER put your user name and password for your yahoo account into a website unless it actually has https:// at the beginning of it, and says YAHOO.COM at the end. Especially never put your usernamd and password into someone elses geocities account. Look at the address bar at the top and pay attention to it, it is why it is there.

It's hard to make a diagnosis because you have really detailed how he hacked her account. But there are things called key-loggers which people can load onto a machine and will send every single key-stroke to another computer so they can see passwords etc. It's unlikely that he's done this but it is possible. And if he's built his own it would be impossible to detect. If you are really concerned about it, wipe the hard drive clean and do a fresh install.

I think we all can pray for you. Is you and your mom saved and 100% sure where you will spend eternity? Do you know Jesus?
Peace.
