A white filling is cured with a special dental light and for that reason you can eat normally (no food restrictions) once you leave the office. If you are numb you may choose to wait until it wears off so you do not bite you lips or cheeks as a result.

Fillings really aren't that big of a deal. Unless the dentist tells you otherwise, you can eat as soon as the anesthetic starts to wear off, maybe an hour or so. It's also a good idea to get something to eat before you go to the dentist so you aren't hungry for a while.
You might want to avoid really hard food like chips or apples, etc. the first day but otherwise you'll be fine to eat within an hour or two. Like someone else said, the main reason why dentists tell you to wait is so that the anesthetic will wear off and you don't bite your toungue or cheek.
You might be a little sore and have some sensitivity to cold drinks for a little while, especially if it was a deep feeling. But it's not a big deal.

I've been told to wait at least three hours. But for me personally, when I leave the dentist, I'm not too inclined to eat anything solid. I'd probably have some scrambled eggs, or something else soft. But that's just me.

You can eat right away- your mouth will probably be a little sore cause they were drilling at your teeth but eating is fine. Just pick something a little soft for the night...Good luck!

what make you think you must wait? Did the doctor tell you that?
I've never had to wait a period of time after eating to have dental work done or after having the work done as long as it was not painful..

Don't eat on that side the rest of the day. While you have any numbness you may eat anything you wish as long as you chew carefully and don't bite yourself.

Well you only have to wait until your not numb anymore. That's the only reason they tell you that so you don't bite your cheek or something.
