We just found out that he is allergic to Cow's milk and our pediatrician says that he has to have enfamil sobee next step. The problem is we already switched him from formula to milk and now trying to get him to drink the formula again is almost impossible. He just spits it right out and crys. I took a sip to try to convince him but my feelings about the taste are the same. Any advice??

While I don't normally believe in giving kids too much sugar this is an exception. Try adding a little chocolate or vanilla. Also, ask the doctor if you can try silk brand soy milk. It is supposedly pretty good.

Instead of Soy Formula, try Silk. I swear by this stuff! Silk is a soy milk you can buy at your grocery store. The kid fortified versions has everything a growing toddler needs. Best part of all, the flavor is Very Vanilla.

My daughter is 14 months. We switched her from the Enfamil Soy formula to milk, which she loved. However, she had the same reaction to milk as she did to breast milk and regular formula. She SCREAMED. So I switched her over to this and she took right to it. It's sweet which is what baby's and toddlers like.

Until you actually get him on a milk alternative that is working I wouldn't suggest mixing with the cow's milk. My daughter and I are both lactose intolerant and to this day, I still cannot drink it without it causing me great pain and discomfort. My daughter has vile reactions to it that include projectile vomit. Bottom line, if your doctor says Soy, I would try Silk first and let his little digestive system settle before introducing the cows milk back in.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

Are there other feeding problems that require him to be on formula?

You don't really have to push the milk issue. Unless, like I said, there are feeding issues.

If not, I would agree with anyone else who has said Silk. Silk is amazing! My son drinks chocolate, vanilla, very vanilla, and even plain after a year of cow's milk. I would try the plain Silk, and if you can't get past the taste, go for the flavors. There's also rice, and almond milk. Make sure you pick up one of the dairy free cookbooks, and I would assume you're aware of all the ingrediants that contain dairy products.

Some of your best food resources could be Vegan cook books, and the like. Anything Vegan will not have cow's (or other animal) milk in it. And of course you can stick in some chicken nuggets if you have no interest in a vegan diet. Also, make sure you try all brands for all products. I found a frozen pizza (like Ellio's) that tastes great. Newman O's look like Oreos and taste great.

This is a link to a great blog. On the left side there are archives and she has 2 school years of vegan lunches (with some recipes). This can give you an idea of some great meals.

Both of my kids are allergic to dairy, and my 2 year old doesn't like meats or eggs. We only decided to try a vegan diet after they were diagnosed with the allergy.

Is this boy older than 1?? If so there is no need for soy formula at this point! Are you sure your doctor didn't tell you to put him on soy milk? My daughter wouldn't even drink cow's milk after a year of breastfeeding. My pediatrician told me to try soy milk, vitamin fortified, and she loves it! She still doesn't like anything with cow's milk.. baby yogurt, milk, etc. She is probably allergic to a milk protein, or lactose intolerant. Try the soy milk.

Can you add something to it?

I would suggest offering him the formula, with chocolate or strawberry or whatever kind of flavored syrup, to make it a cool new thing. DON'T let him see you mixing it. It may be helpful to give it to him in a different container than he got cow's milk in.

If he takes it, slowly wean him off of it by changing the ratio of chocolate and formula. Add less and less until you aren't adding anything and he's back to being used to the formula.

I know it's not great to offer him chocolate syrup on a regular basis, but in some cases, it's a necessary evil. It's fat free, and they do make a sugar-free version of it as well. It's not great tasting, but his tastes aren't exactly refined yet. A tablespoon of chocolate syrup isn't all that much to pay for him getting the nutrients in his milk.

Depending on how old he is, see if you can switch him to regular soy milk you find in the dairy section instead of using the formula. It'll most likely taste at least a littlebetter.

Try to mix it a little to ween him off of cows milk. Also try rice milk, almond milk by Blue Diamond (the ones that make almonds), and try different flavors like vanilla, chocolate. Maybe even try strawberry quick powder that is enriched, or Ovaltine. Maybe even Pediasure might work, expensive but may help to ween him off. Herbalife has a protein shake for kids, might want to research that to. You can by Horchata by Kerns, which is a mexican rice drink with sugar and cinnamon; don't worry about sugar because the Cinnamon can lower blood sugar. There are all kinds of ways but hope there are a few that can help you here. Good luck and God Bless.

try goat's milk. that is somewhat greater costly than cow's milk, yet with reference to the same fee as soy. that is much less complicated to digest than cow's milk and for my area tastes very nearly like cows milk (and a lot greater valuable tasting than soy milk)

Well, although he has milk allergies, I would mix the soy milk with cow's milk to start *(as long as the reactions are not life threatening of course!). You could also try another type of mil, like rice milk. Perhaps you could try a different flavor of soy milk until you find the one he sticks to. By then, he will be used to the texture of soy milk. Eventually, if he wants his "milk", he'll have no choice but to like it!

Try getting vanilla flavored Soy Milk. Regular milk doesn't taste the same as Soy Milk...vanilla soy milk is a little sweeter and tastes better.

I didn't know why your doctor would put him on that. If you go to a grocery store there is near the milk section called soy milk. It all soy. my son was allergic to milk and he drink that. They have it all different flavors. There vanilla and chocolate and it ina half gallon container. It would help for you and him and it would tast better.
