don't know how hard it is at this point. the 'safety' of the 0231 depends on what your bfs specific assignment is. i would guess that he might not know the details of that until after boot camp at the earliest or until sometime during intel school. my wife survived gulf war I as a 0231.

Yes it is. If he's already taken the oath to enlist in the Marines, it's almost too late to switch to any other branch. Just because he chose the Marine doesn't mean it isn't a safe choice. A civilian can die in the streets of their home town at a greater rate than a Marine in Iraq. Funny thing is you can be reading this right now and the next moment you're dead.

As a veteran of Op. Enduring Freedom, and from my experiences working in an Army-run military detention facility (prison) I can give you some assurance that your bf will most likely be gathering intel from prisoners (assuming he is a part of a military police confinement unit) or conducting interviews with local tribal leaders or other persons who might have connections with the insurgency. As a general rule, the only personnel who directly/indirectly engage with the enemy are infantry/Special Ops., Field MPs, and soldiers involved in convoy operations. During my TDY I never heard reports of MI operatives getting injured, maimed, or killed Most of the casualties were of convoys being ambushed by IED attacks and infantry soldiers involved in firefights while engaging insurgents. I wish both you and him good luck and advise you to be patient and supportive, and advise him to avoid doing anything that may be construed as prisoner abuse or a violation of the Geneva Convention. Also, I would advise him to avoid any object or area that seems suspicious.

Why do you think the Army is any safer than the Marines. What makes it more dangerous is not the branch of the service but the MOS that you choose. He is going into the military and there are no guarantees that he will be safe or not.

in my opinion the Marines are much safer and has better advantages. The Marines are stationed everywhere like my bro is stationed on an aircraft carier instead of on the ground in iraq. if your in the army your chances of going to iraq are greater and you will deff be on the ground. So support him! and if he is shipped to Iraq pray for him and support him still. If you join the military you support the war and that means you should support him no matter what! i know a few soldiers who are friends of the family and stuff and they are really upset now a days that few Americans support them. Also my sis just went to a recruiter and they said that the Marines and Navy have more job opprotunites and benefits.

Why would you want him to switch to the army. I mean my hubby is in the army and has been for awhile but the army deploys the longest, their bases are in the middle of nowhere, and sometimes their facilities are not the best on post.

Is this only because he was told that he might deploy soon. I mean if it is, don't you know that chances are he will deploy when he joins the army anyways. I mean you might have to learn to let go a little.

I prefer outfits, rather than service....namely, 2nd Marine Division, 101st Airborne, 3rd Armoured Division, 82nd Airborne, Big Red One....in that order.

girl, get a grip of yourself. how many different ways of asking about your bf's transferring to this or that service are you going to ask. let him decide whatever branch of service he wants to join. you'll have a heart attack even before he gets to war.
