In our Hunter Safety manual Conservation is the "wise use of natural resources and wildlife
.
Preservation is the "non-use of natural resources and wildlife.

Many non hunters think that if you don't hunt the animals they will live forever.(Let Mother Nature take care of them they always say)
NOT SO. I have been on Winter Kill counts in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and to see how those deer and elk die is sickning. I saw animals that could not even be recognised because they were just a bag of bones covered with ragged skin.
I saw a doe that was on her feet but for all purposes dead. She had maggots falling out of her mouth and her tongue was hanging out and black and swollen twice it's size. At some time a lion or a coyote had bitten into her hind quarter and torn off some meat while she was still living. The wound did not even bleed because her blood pressure was so low. She was blind with abcesses and tumors around her eyes. We were not allowed to mercy kill the half-dead animals so I had to walk away from her skin and bones body.
As we were leaving that mountain valley I went back to where she was still standing. She was dead but frozen in place. I gently laid her down on the ground.

Don't tell me that preservation is the best way to go. The reason those deer were dead is because they starved to death as the herd was too big to support all of them. I would rather have the animal put down with one fast killing shot and the meat used by the hunter and his family than have them die in pain and torture.
