It all depends on the situation. Are you talking about target, compitition, self defence.........

depends on what type of gun and the circumstances. For target shooting you are best with the gun at arms length. That gives you more accurate sighting. In combat or defensive shooting it gives you an easy point and shoot picture but exposes the gun to an enemy so he may try to disarm you.

In close quarters situations of self defense any of the other distances would be ok.

with pistols you may get some dischage from around the cylinders when the gun is fired, in automatics the cartridge is ejected so you may get affected by them depending on the guns position.
