Just trying to understand this concept of faith. I need a good comparison. As we have already established, the sun rising is not a good example.

My faith in god is equal to my faith in my wife. She will and has been there for me everyday. When I am sick, when I have problems at work and when I have problems with life in general. Like God I know she wants me to be a better person. Like god I know she loves me. Like god she sometimes tests me. Like God there are times I am frustrated by her yet I will never leave her. Like god she help me create life with my 2 kids. Like god she wants the best for out two kids. Like god I chose her.

Thank you we are very happy in our marriage

I think the sun rising IS a pretty good example. You just know that's how it is. You accept it. You believe it. That's pretty much how my faith is - most of the time.

My faith is that everything is as it should be. It's a perfect Universe. It's my job to see it that way.

Faith is not always easy. It's easier when you have PROOF.

Here's an analongy: Say you ask your Dad (who has always come through for you) to loan you $100.00. He says he'll put it in the mail. So - you start to plan as if you have the $100.00 - don't you? You have FAITH.

Some people don't have faith in God - because God has never come through for them. Or It didn't "do It's job" when it was really important. Some people lose their faith when their children die of diseases - or a natural disaster hits. But truly - I've learned the rough times are the times when my faith serves me the best. Others lose their faith because their lives aren't charmed.

It's easier to have faith when you've had some proof - or at least something that you perceive as proof of God. And - I guess if your Dad was a useless drunk - you wouldn't have much faith that the $100.00 was coming.

Having faith is a choice.

You can compare anything to anything. As far as faith in God is concerned, nothing compares. Imagine being able to trust someone so much that no matter what, you win: in life and death!
Do you have faith in gravity? Because you know that if you hold up something and let it go, it will fall. It's just a more familiar faith because we deal with it (gravity) every day.
Of the two, God and gravity, if you compare, One invites you up, the other puts you down. How's that for a comparison? Both are defied on a regular basis as well. When we defy God it's a sin. When we defy gravity it's a tech mirical called an airplane. So, similarities and differences. God Bless You!

Analogies will never be perfect

First you must define faith -- say something that is hoped for but not seen.

So you could use the Sun analogy where in the at night the sun is not seen but there are direct clues to it's existence like the moon and the non freezing temperatures.

God is there but unseen like the sun but clues like the Bible, Historical accounts of Jesus, DNA sequencing, personal revelation etc.

Planting seeds is also analogous to believing in an outcome not yet realized but having hope that in the future the desired outcome will unfold. Again there are proofs of a crop but not yet realized when you plant.

Same with God when you start believing you don't have much other than hope. then as time progresses and you see God working in your life it's like seeing the plant breach the soil and you still have hope for fruit (or faith in God's love). and so on.

No metaphor is perfect.

My pastor who was a professor of Philosophies of Education explained it this way:

Faith is an action,

based upon belief,

sustained by confidence.

According to him, you cannot function normally without it. The issues of God aside, faith is in our lives and we act on it continually.

One example I can give you is when it's dark, and you enter into a room that you cannot see into. As you are walking into the room you know where the light switch is and you turn it on, never coming to a stop. You act in faith because you know that the light will come on as soon as the switch is moved; the chances are the light will come on, so you do not need to slow your progress into the dark room. Your confidence is built up over time, and you know where the objects are in the room and so will have the confidence that you will not walk into them.

I am really sorry that more people do not know this. They see the word or hear the word faith an are capable of applying it only to those things which have to do with religion.

I hope that I've convinced you that it is otherwise.

Idolatries are the things that we find glory in that are not God... such as being a devoted fan of a sports team with all your heart, wanting to just die when we find a Louis Vuitton bag on sale... um, trying to think of good examples here but it's just too early.

Point is we all sin and praise things other than God. There really is no "good" comparison... that would be an oxymoron because it's not good to praise anything other than God... but if you had to compare it I'd say it's the faith you have in your own children. It never fails... no matter what you'll always believe in them.

Yeah, okay... now I'm on track... that's what it's like.

The definition of faith is having a firm belief in something for which there is no proof. Except for God you have some proof of other things that you have faith in. For example, a person cannot actually prove that they will be in love with the same person for their entire life but real, actual past experiences allow them to have faith that that is the way it will be. Unless God actually spoke to you personally, in actual words, you have not one single piece of evidence (tangible or intangible) to logically justify your faith in Him. That's why faith in God is contested by non-blievers.

If you truly take an honest look at your faith, where did it come from? Was it because somebody told you God was real? or because you actually saw/spoke to him? I'm guessing that somebody told you. And how do you know that they are right? Because they read the Bible? Can you prove that the Bible is really the Word of God? No. But you choose to believe that it is. That is religious faith. That is the only thing people are willing to believe without proof. When it comes to non-religious matters; there is a word for people who believe what their told without proof. Gullible.

The faith that I have in God is very deeply rooted. I believed in God when I was a child and it turned out to have very little to do with the religion in which I was raised. I cant even start to compare the faith I have in God with anything else on earth. My faith cant be defined in the same terms that I'd talk about the faith I have in my children or other loved ones. There are some things in this life that cant be given form. If I may presume, if at your age, you still dont know how to define faith, you probably never will. It could have something to do with your lack of faith.

I am a soccer coach, and the kids are ages 6 to 7 years old. I've never coached anything before in my life. But, the longer and the more effort I put into these children, the more they prove to me how wonderful they really are.
Our last game, we 'won' and I was so proud of them. My heart pounded with joy and love for them and I looked back at all the sweat and effort I put into them. I wasn't sure if what I was teaching them was sinking in their minds. Until I saw them playing the game. I had faith that they would do ok for the game.. I just didn't know how AWESOME they really turned out to be! So, basically I went to the last game with thoughts that they wouldn't do nearly as good as they did. My faith for them was not as high as it is now. They proved to me they do listen and respect me!

I have faith that the seasons will change. And they always do. I don't know how they change but I can feel it when it changes. I have faith that when a sperm and egg come together life begins and a baby will be born 9 months later. I don't know how all the parts come together and go into the right place, but they do. I have faith that what I feel on my face when I go outside is wind. I can't see it or touch it but I know it is there and it exists - I feel it and have faith that it is truly wind.

I believe that a true faith in God compels you to live your life in a certain manner placing your trust in Him.

Having faith in anything will give you a level of comfort in knowing that you can rely on that event (such as the sun rising) will happen, or that the person (spouse, friend, etc) will be there for you when needed.

See, all faith requires the same acceptance by you.
