Does anyone know if there is any recourse you can take toward the establishments that let someone use stolen credit cards without checking I.D.

Thanks

The police have been called and the credit cards have been stopped. We have a picture from one of the stores of the person that used the card. I just want to know if there is anything that can be done to these stores.

My card is not signed and also says ask for I.D.. One of the stores did ask for I.D., the girl using the card is hispanic, dark hair in her early 20's. I on the other hand have blond hair, weigh more than her. I am white and 46 years old. Hmmm, sounds like we look alike to me.

Report the fraud to the police and to the credit card company. You probably should put a fraud alert on your credit report at all three credit bureaus.

You have no recourse against the establishments. The credit card company might, but not you personally.

You can refuse to pay most or all of the charges that were made on the cards if you reported them stolen promptly. The bank will then debit the store's account (they will not profit from the transaction and will have essentially given the merchandise away for free).

If you can prove that the store knew that the cards were stolen and accepted them anyway, they probably broke some law.

If the store (because it did not check ID) thought that the cards were not stolen, it has done nothing wrong. Stores are not required to check ID on every credit card transaction. My ID is very rarely checked for any credit card transactions except renting cars (and they are checking it to verify that my license is good, not because I am using a credit card).

Don't worry, the credit card company will investigate. Since I assume that the credit card company has now refunded your money, they are the ones that have a vested interest in finding out which institutions did not ask for ID. You could also report the institution to the police, but they will probably just file a report. I suppose you could also report them to the Better Business Bureau in your state.

Report it to the police and also to the credit card company. Rightful credit card holders whose cards got stolen and used fraudulently will be charged for transactions they did not enter. It is imperative that a stolen credit card's line be cut off immediately.

An incident like this happened to me about a year ago and the only reason I was able to take action against the retail stores was because on my signature line on my credit card...I NEVER sign it...I always write...."PLEASE ASK TO SEE PHOTO I.D." My attorney told me that was the only reason I had a case.

I don't think there is any recourse against the establishment. Checking ID is not a requirement for using a credit card. Some places have their own policies to check ID, but most don't.

You need to report this to the police right away.
