Food preparation is a good one, and I am a great cook.
I knit for people. I think it shows someone how much I love them when I take a week to knit a pair of socks for them.

caring for and raising a child. there is no immediate return. it's a never ending job. and much of it, at least in the early years requires attention to distasteful details (diapers, etc)
that and making the final preparations for a dead person. again, there is no return on the effort, it's purely a truly altruistic deed.

Principled love is the highest form of love. Based on principles, it is not dependent on other outside things. It is not dependent on even knowing one another. It is doing good for people as it is the right thing to do based on principles.

The everyday, mundane things you do for your family and friends consistently.. things that build trust and loyalty and let them know that you are there for them all of the time. That means more than some big one-time deal.

I agree about making food. It takes thought, time, care and obviously love.
I think unexpected and unnecessary acts of kindness are close behind.

Listening--truly listening--when someone needs to be heard.
Another way of phrasing it would be exercising human empathy: "putting oneself in another's shoes."
