Well, the new testament was written by men in the early Church, decades and more after Jesus supposedly died, who never met him, and since the early Church became the Catholic Church, I'd say probably Purgatory is where the dead are in that verse.

They are in the grave. What about heaven or hell??? Read on into the chapter vs. 4,5 where people have turned away from the true teachings to accumulate teachers for themselves to have their ears tickled. The Bible shows us the dead are not able to feel anything of pleasure or pain. Bliss or torment is irrelevant. John 5:28-29 says all those in the memorial tombs will be resurrected for a judgment. So the dead are in the grave asleep in death until then.

Some now dead will never be granted a resurrection. They are in Gehenna. It is not a literal place of torture, but is a fitting symbol of eternal destruction. (Ecclesiastes 9:5,10; Luke 12:4,5)

The dead spoken of here are those who will be resurrected.(John 5:28) These include those who were not chosen to go to heaven and the unrighteous.(Revelation 7:9; 14:1-3; Acts 24:15)

Jesus will judge these ones and will reward those who are obedient with everlasting life on earth, but those who are not obedient will be cast into the lake of fire, which also means being eternally destroyed. It is also called the second death(Revelation 20:11-15)

The "dead" who are not saved in Jesus Christ are in hell- and on judgment day God will cast all those who are not saved - into the lake of fire as stated in Revelation 20.
It says He will cast hell and hades into the lake of fire-- so all of those who do not believe will end up there.
Jesus will judge the living and the dead-- One day the Lord will come back to rapture His church ( those who are saved) in the end, all who are still remaining here on earth will be judged ( those who did not actually die a physical death, but the "END" has come) So there will be many who died on earth, those who were raptured, who did not die-- then those who were not raptured and did not die- but judgment day has come. (end of the world)- He will separate the sheep from the goats ( the saved from the unsaved) Then the Lord will create a new heaven and earth as the last book of Revelation says- the "New Jerusalem will be His Kingdom"
So He will judge the living and the dead. It would be good for you to do a study on Revelation. I did a wonderful study on it some years back, the Lord truly opened my eyes to so much- and I would say it was one of my favorite studies!

2Ti 4:1
I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom:

*Paul* speaks of Jesus, who will judge the living (duh - those who aren't dead, like the one's Paul was writing to at the time he was writing) and the dead (those who are).

"When you die you either go to Heaven or Hell. "

This is one teaching among many. Many sects teach that heaven comes only after the final judgment, others that only a few attain heaven immediately upon death.
