Many wineries have classes, winemaker dinners, etc. Check out the wineries in Temecula and San Diego at: http://www.cheers2wine.com/southern-california-wineries.html
This website has direct links to all of the wineries.

An idea that sounds like fun is:
Wine Boot Camp is an interactive one day experience for wine lovers. Wine novices and experts experience firsthand the joys and frustrations of winemaking. Work hands-on in the vineyard and the cellar under the direction of top winemakers and viticulturists. The cost is $425, which includes a bottle of wine you create, lunch, dinner, a t-shirt, transportation, and extensive wine tasting. Boot camps are conducted in other locations and on other dates as well. Learn more about Wine Boot Camp from the July issue of Cheers2Wine News available online at: http://www.cheers2wine.com/Cheers_2_Wine_News-July2007.html

I love Northern Califormia. If you go to Sacramento State you would be in the middle between the Bay Area and Lake Tahoe if you need to get away for a weekend. Plus the redwoods and oceanside beaches are way cool in Northern Ca. Southern California is too congested.

At most book stores you can purchase "The Complete Wine Course" it is a comprehensive guide to wine tasting, pairing and purchasing. It is a favorite of starting collectors and experts alike. Good Luck!

If you have a favorite wine shop, you can ask them.
They could point to any wine appreciation groups, classes and reading sources.
