You have to accept the message of Jesus...that requires faith that Jesus told the truth when he said that God loved us and that because of him we could have eternal life.
I don't pretend to know what that means or why faith is important...perhaps faith will allow me to recognize Jesus in the afterlife so I can follow him to God's home (heaven)...perhaps it is more complex than that...it doesn't matter because the essential message is clear that an invitation to heaven is a product of God's grace and love for me (us) and that I need only accept it to be forgiven for the consequences of sin (defining "sin" as "separation from God").

CHRISTIANS believe that by following in the footsteps of CHRIST, and by believing he is the true SON of GOD... You will lead a more righteous life and will be able to get in to heaven. (That or the "GO TO HEAVEN FREE" pass in the community chest.)

1st 3 answers good but incomplete. I am not going to look up these verses (again), so I will merely enumerate
1) Believe that Jesus is the son of God, born of virgin Mary, died for our sins, was resurrected, and is the only path to salvation. This is the "minimum" requirement. Assuming life continues after you have reached this point...
2) Obedience to the commands of God (if you love me you will obey my commands, you must love Jesus to inherit eternal life)
3) Good works (when I was hungry, you did not, etc., and "the demons believe")

you just have to believe in Christ's death and resurrection for your sins. thats it
Being a good moral person doesn't mean anything in God's eyes.
Good works are a result of God's righteousness. Good works will not get us into heaven.
