Unless it's actually being used....I really don't think it matters. However, if NOT in use....the lens should be opposite of the direction of travel to avoid debris hitting and damaging the lens.

If IN use....towards the object in need of illumination!

that depends on what the situation is..Is it a new stiff light or a older wore out loose light. Is it the driver's side or passenger side? what time of day? are you just driving around or on a traffic stop? do you have a partner or by yourself?
