It does happen. A guy I worked with won the Lucky-For-Life, where they received $1000 a week for life and that was pretty cool! My sister's friend's mom won the lotto! Didn't matter because they already lived in a waterfront mansion, ironically...
I think my chances of winning are slim to almost nihil, but I'll still play about $1.00 a month, if I remember to go and pick up a ticket. Nothing to put my hopes and dreams into, but nothing to break the bank either so I can manage it...

I generally spend £2 per week on the normal lotto. If it is a rollover I might also play on a Wednesday. I have no time for all their other games. I think people would be lying if they said they didn't particularly want to win the jackpot. I know I do.
I tend to do absolutely crap on the lotto on the majority of weeks, one number here and there but I occasionaly win a tenner. I have a couple of theories which shape how I play and approach the lottery.
i) I play lucky dip then I find I am not duty bound to play every single week. (sod's law applies here, you know the minute you fail to play your regular numbers that's when they come up!)
ii) I don't grumble about picking up the odd tenner, I would rather have this than pick up one of the lesser prize funds (eg 5 numbers = a couple of grand) because lets face it, you get 5 numbers then it is highly unlikely that you are ever going to get as close as that again.
My one tip is for 'spread betting'. I.E. if you are playing to try and pick up more of the smaller prize funds is to play two lines..one line covering the first half group of numbers 1 - 24 and the second covering the second group 24-49. Trust me this hugely improves your chances of the 3,4 and 5 number prize funds.
Finally here's a little thought along the 'infinate monkeys/typewriters' theory. We are assured that the picking of numbers is entirely random and down to chance. Therefore it is entirely feasible that the numbers 1-6 are drawn in that order 'someday'. How long would we have to wait for that to happen?

I play the lottery every saturday. I only pay £1.
Every time i play it, i actually have the feeling i am going to win something big. But i never have. Since January i have won £10, about 8 times. So im not doing that bad. But still the jackpot would be nice.

we have 2 lottery winners (5 plus bonus) and 2 pools winners in our street. wish some of the luck would come my way though lol. most I've had is a couple hundred. 4 numbers, a pick 2 and a £50 scratch card all on the same day. you would have thought I'd actually won the jackpot the way i was jumping round

I just understand the odds:
179,000,000 to 1 (approx)
I only play when it gets really high, because 179,000,000 to 1 beats 179,000,000 to 0. I spend more a year on Pizza than the Lottery.
Checking my numbers is a better dream that I will get $300 million, than a billionaire just walking into my house and offering me the same.
BTW-Any billionaires wishing to give me even $1 million to re-enact Indecent Proposal, write me!

I want to win it. I never do. I think that the tax rule that states you can only deduct losses up to the amount of winnings you claim sucks because I usually lose, if I win it doesn't come close to the losses.. give me a break! I only hope that the school are actually getting a good chunk but who knows if they really are.

I play it, view on lottery win some/lose some, don't expect to win, don't blow all your savings/paycheck on it, sooner or later someone gotta win it.
It does happen to oneself.

I am going to play tonight. The Mega jackpot is $206,000,000 and the odds against are only 176,000,000 to 1 against. Looks like a good bet to me.
The Super California Lotto jackpot is $80,000,000 and the odds against are 41,416,353 to 1 against.
I happen to have two dollars of change in my car that I will use to buy these two tickets.
