The Standing position, also known as "Offhand", refers to shooting while standing. It is often regarded as the most difficult position. The rules vary depending on the shooting discipline. Generally, you must stand freely, without the aid of a rest or bench. Highpower rifle, smallbore rifle, and silhouette shooting do not permit the use of a sling. International Precision Air Rifle events are fired only in the Standing position. International Three Position Rifle includes Standing as the second stage of competition, as well as for finals. Running target is also shot in the standing position without the aid of slings.

Standing gives the least support because you have nothing to prop your elbows up on.

I have been at ranges that have a homemade standing benches to prop your elbows on while shooting.

Prone has the most support because you are mostly on the ground. Sitting comes next because you can rest your elbows on both knees. Then kneeling, as you can only rest one elbow on a knee.
