I have two cat's and the young one will purrrrr from just being spoken too. My older cat has never been the purring type. Although she loves to give and receive affection. Why do some cats purr and other don't.. Where is the purr come from? Is it part of their vocal chords?

No two cats are the same and some don't purr when you pet them either because they don't feel completey comfortable or they may be accepting being petted when they actually want something else and so they don't purr until they get what they want. Also, some cats purr when they are in pain as a way to heal themselves. Cats have a special membrane in their throat that makes the vibrating sound we call purring. It is separate from their vocal cords and they can purr and meow at the same time causing a trilling sound that mother cats use to communicate with their kittens. I have a cat who eats, purrs, and meows all at once making a really strange sound like he's choking and another male cat who trills when he is confronted with a cat that hisses at him. Also, I have a small female cat who greets me with a trill that sounds like she's saying Brrrrrur rolling her "R" like a true Scotsman. Every cat I ever had in the past 25 years was incredibly different from all the others and several didn't purr at all, and some purred all the time no matter what. I think it has a lot to do with how they are raised and how they are treated when they are small.

No one knows where the purrs go from. And kitties have different personalities and expressions. Some are really talkative and purrrrrative and others aren't.
I have two kitties, one who purrs loudly and one who barely ever purrs and you can't hear it. I like to think she's soooo happy all the time she doesn't need to express it through purring, just through being sweet and affectionate!

All cats purr its just a matter of how loud they do it. You can see if their purring by putting your index and middle finger right under their chin. And if you feel a little vibration then you know they are purring

hope I could help. (:

No one has ever really figured out how a cat purrs- though many have tried to.

And kitties, like humans, have personalities. I think if you put your hand on the quiet kitty, you might even feel a silent purr there.
