Sadly, the XC90 is not appreciably better on fuel economy than the Suburban. The 2008 fuel economy numbers are out (the EPA has revised their testing methods to yield more accurate MPG numbers) and this is how the XC90 rates:

XC90 AWD 3.2L engine: 14 city, 20 hwy
XC90 AWD 4.4L engine: 13 city, 19 hwy

XC90 FWD 3.2L engine: 14 city 20 hwy
(There is no FWD 4.4L engine model offered)

This is about the same as the Suburban 4WD 5.3L engine (14 city, 19 hwy), and slightly better than the 4W 6.0L engine (12 city, 17 hwy).

Here's some reviews of the XC90, they are rather mixed.

the gas mileage is 16 City 22 highway for the 3.2 liter 6
and 15 city 20 highway for the V8
the XC90 is also the cheapest car to insure

You can go to ford's web site and click on the Volvo link and look up the specs on the XC90
