My kitty has had diarhea for the last 3 days. And he's fuzzy and gets if all over his butt. I came home today and there was poop everywhere around the litter box and huge piles of diarhea in the litter box. Please don't just tell me to call the vert because I'm a good kitty mom and already did and he's going tomorrow. In the mean time, any reccomendations? We've had this problem before, and changed the food, and then he got better. He's 11 months old and we just changed from the Purina One kitten food, to Purina indoor formula. Yesterday we changed back to the Purina one kitten because it did the trick before. However, I have heard that Purina is bad for your cats. He's acting fine, still hyper and playful, so we're thinking it's the food thats doing it to him.. If you've had this problem, what food have you gfiven your kitty? or just any reccomendations in general. Also, we have a guinea pig, and we think he might get a hold of his timothy hay, could this be a problem? HELP!

Purina ONE in particular is very good food. My dogs get it an my vet approves of it. Purina and the other Purina foods aren't so great and are full of filler. I would stay with Purina ONE. You could also try giving him a little bit of plain yogurt (for a kitten I'd do about 1 teaspoon a couple times a day). That may help re-establish the good gut bacteria. If your vet recommends regular Science Diet I would NOT use it. SD is grain based. Purina ONE is meat based. Maybe the cat has an infection and the vet can treat that. You might bring a stool sample with you when you go so he can check for parasites or worms.
I'm not sure about the timothy hay, but I would guess that if your cat eats it it could cause the runs.

When I first got my kitty she had a diarhea problem. We were already taking her to the vet for her first visit. They checked her for everything and nothing was wrong. Then we gaver her medication and a new wet food. After the medication we tried some other wet food thinking that maybe her stomach was a little "older". But the diarhea problem came back. So now we feed her science diet kitten and at night she gets a quarter can of a wet food by Hills. It's a special diet food, the vet recommended it. Its called W/D Chicken I think. I haven't tried giving her any other food because she likes what she eats. I would recommend different food then purina. Science Diet is good I think. Good Luck with your kitty!

If your kitty has diarrhea when you change his food, and stops when you change back, that means you changed his diet too quickly.
When you change a cat's diet, you need to do it gradually. They get used to eating a particular combination of foods and when you change it all of a sudden, it irritates their digestion. Over the course of a week or two, gradually add more of the new stuff and less of the old stuff, until they're completely switched over. If you notice any signs of trouble, back off on the amount of the new food for a couple of days, then resume.
And I've never had any problem with Purina in 20 years of cat ownership.

When I had this problem, it was indeed the food. Keep the kitty on the kitten food until you see the vet, it should balance out in his system. Question the vet on the Purina, he should be able to let you know for sure if it is bad for him. You're doing what you can for now just make sure to keep him hydrated until tomorrow.

trust me Purina One is great food ...when you switched to purina indoor formula was that Purina One as well? im sure that it is the food switch that is giving the loose bowels...there is a way to switch the foods gradually and it should be listed on the bag...you cant just switch from one to the other just like that....i dont know if he will eat it but boiled ground beef and rice would help with the loose stools try it im not sure if a cat will eat this...and just tell the vet all his symptoms when you take him in tomorrow...good luck

I am sure you already know that when you change foods to do it gradually.
For now withold food and give his tummy a rest. Replace his water with unflavored pedalyte to replace electrolites and prevent dehydration.
A small amount of can pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling) can add fiber and may help firm up stool.
Felidae is a excellent food http://www.canidae.com/
I personally would never use purina, compare the ingredient labels and remember cats are obligate carnivores.

It might well be the Timothy hay.
Purina itself isn't a bad brand. But some kitties do have sensitivities, and apparently yours is one of them.
I've had a couple of kitties that this happened to- but by the time it happened, they had a huge number of wide-spread problems.
Right now, you'll probably want to keep water available for your kitty so he won't dehydrate. Hopefully your vet can help.
Good luck!

well make sure that when your switchin the food around you do it gradually cuz there bodies go into a kind of shock when u change it like one food one day and another food the next.
That could be was makes him sick.
You should start one day with the first food
the second day 3/4 first food and 1/4 new food
third day 1/2 first food and 1/2 new food
and so forth....
hope that helps

Please withhold his food and give his digestive system a rest. Since diarrhea dehydrates try getting some pediatric electrolytes in the baby food section of your store. While there pick up a few jars of meat baby food. The baby food will re introduce him to food that is not too harsh for his delicate digestive system while the Pedialyte (brand name) will help to balance kitty's electrolytes as they are out of balance right now.

Read the ingredients on your cat's food. You'd be painting the house brown too if you ate that stuff.
Now go to your local organic market. Read the ingredients on organic cat food. I feed my cats a brand called Pet Promise, and they love it. Organic catfood has real meat as the first ingredient, followed by human-quality grain and feline-friendly veggie ingredients. No byproducts. No hormones or antibiotics or other chemicals used in the production of the meat (the first ingredient) or the grain, or the veggies. Just real food, and that's it.
Try feeding your cat organic catfood and see if he ever paints your house brown again.
