What a wonderful question!!!!
We are told by God the formula for understanding and knowing the meaning of the Bible. It is found in 2 Tim. 2:15.
We are not merely to READ it, but to STUDY IT, and to study it a certain way.
"Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs NOT to be ashamed, RIGHTLY DIVIDING the Word of Truth."
So there is a way to be an ashamed workman, and that is to NOT "rightly divide" the Word of Truth. What does this mean? To rightly divide something means to make distinctions in Gods Word where HE makes them. He makes a clear distincition between the gospel of the CIRCUMCISION, which was and is to the Nation Israel in times past and ages to come, and the gospel of the UNCIRCUMCISION which is for we who are His Body today.
If you dont make the distinctions between Gods plan for Israel and His plan for we who are the church which is His Body, then you will be constantly mixing the two together and coming up confused.
OUR instructions for the AGE of GRACE in which God is operating today are found in Romans thru Philemon. Those are where we find the words of Christ RISEN from the dead to we who ARE the "NEW Creation".
Thats how you study the Bible to understand it! If you would like a FREE BOOK on this very issue, please contact me and I will be happy to mail it to you.
Great question, really.

I study in many different ways. Sometime i read it and pray with God. Sometime I pray and pick a topic. sometime i look at a single verse and spend time just on it with prayer. So I would say the way I study is with Prayer and I let God do the rest. One of my fav sites is www.blueletterbible.com you can go back to the original Greek and Hebrew to get the original intent of the scripture. there is also commentary and articles written for every verse. it is a huge site once you get to know it. I cant live without it to be honest it is such a help for study.

It varies. sometimes its both. I have a quest study bible that asks questions: "why would this verse say this..." gets you thinking.
I get my devotionals from Greg Laurie and Bible Gateway is a great site with all translations of the bible.

I do different things. When I'm teaching, I try to cover the whole text over a longer period of time. When I'm doing devotionals, I go over whatever the Lord put on my heart for that time.
