Sometimes you hear a clicking on the line - I dfon't think there is anyway to tell most of the time

A cheap telephone marketed to teens was developed a few years ago that blinked by testing the line impedance, I believe it was made for girls but I don't remember who made the unit. As has been said before the phone company can come out but this might not get the kind of resolution you can from simply continually testing the line yourself, also some office phone systems have lights to indicate when a line is in use even when the phone is on the hook (so that employees know which lines are actually free. This works on the same principle.

The phone company can check the load on the line and compare it with what you know you have. This is more complicated if you have a whole bunch of phones than if you have 1 or 2.
