I spent 18 yrs on the Army Pistol Team and it is like John T says. Take a breath, exhale half of it and squeeze your shot off. We also were trained to shoot between heart beats.
Worked for me and all the other Master Class Shooters.

I seem to remember the Army teaching me to exhale about half of it, pausing, then squeezing the trigger between your heart beats. I have read different opinions on the subject, so the best source of material for your question would be any study materials you (hopefully) received.

start slowly exhaling while squeezing the trigger.
Holding your breath causes the sight to bounce with your heart rate. Squeeze on the exhale and you will nail it every time.
