Does anyone know what a pop up flash is/how it works on a digital camera. I'm thinking of buying an SLR camera, and it says 'comes with pop-up flash'? any ideas?

Most digital cameras come with a flash of some sort and many of these are pop-up. All it means is that the flash is concealed but when required, it will pop-up from within the camera body, usually on the top. These flashs are pretty small and without a lot of power but they are great for snap shooting at parties. The problem with them is that they are of necessity close to the lens so "redeye" can be a problem. If you are going to the expense of a digital SLR, make sure that it has a hot shoe. This enables the attachment of a separate flash gun which is much more powerful.

When you want to take a picture with flash, the flash (which is normally hidden in the camera) pops up... I don't think you should buy a DSLR camera without first learning the basics of using cameras and photography.

Hello,

The pop-up flash is built into the camera and pops-up when the camera decides it is needed when in the basic modes and pops-up when you want it too when in the creative modes. The reason it pops-up is to put it as high above the camera as possible helping to reduce red-eye (supposedly). When in the basic picture modes, if the flash is needed it will pop up when you depress the shutter button halfway down. In the creative modes you must push the button on the side of the camera for it to pop-up.

It is a built-in flash that "pops up" when the camera decides it is needed.

Regardless of which DSLR you buy make sure it has TTL (which is off-sensor flash metering) and supports an off-camera flash.
