Modern day Christians are not asked to tithe (which means one tenth), but to "give as you purpose in your heart".
In more real terms, you make a promise to God about what you will be giving to His work, knowing that in the past 10% was the requirement, but also knowing that of those who are more richly blessed more is required.
So, if you missed some of your promised giving, God is not going to send lightning down to smite you. But, keep in mind the promise, and try to make things right.
The troubles that kept you from your giving may have been a test. What would have happened if you gave first and worried later, I wonder?

I tithe, and at church every year we have the opportunity to meet with the Bishop and he asks me if I'm a full tithe payer. If I'm not, I can pay what I need to pay to become one right then (if I have the funds to do so). If I am then the meeting is over. It's nice to be able to say that for the past 12 months (we always have it in December) I've been a full tithe payer. So for me, if I were in your position, I would pay it and give myself until the end of the year to do so if it were a financial hardship to do so all at once. If you wind up not getting it all paid by the time you set, then you can either extend the time, or start afresh. My point is give yourself a reasonable amount of time to repay it (try not to make it so hard on yourself that you slip back into not paying it), stick to that date, and every year interview yourself on that date to see if you are a full tithe payer.

If you won't go into debt over paying past tithes then I would pay past tithes. Maybe just add a little extra to your tithe each time until you are caught up. God bless you for your obedience. It is amazing what happens in your life financially and in other areas when you tithe. My husband and I are firm believers that God doesn't need our money but it's the obedience he desires from us. Besides, our church needs the money to keep going and to be able to do outreach in the community etc.

You should do whatever feels right to you. Tithing (in my opinion) is between you and the God within you. If your heart is saying it wants to give more - do it. If your brain is saying that you will go in debt if you give more - don't do it.
Tithing is circulation. Giving and receiving is the natural flow.
If you tell the church that you are going to give them a certain amount in the coming year - and it turns out that you can't do it - it's important to let them know - because they are trying to work on a budget.
But - remember too - that tithing (circulation) need not be only given to your church. Maybe you want to send some to third world countries or donate it to cancer research or whatever.
You know what feels right. The God within you will help you to know. I'm sure you'll do the right and perfect thing.
Namaste!!

I would go back and pay it. I have done the same thing and I always go back and pay the times I missed. the sad thing is though we should never have missed in the first place! If we put tithing before everything else (because it is the most important thing) the Lord would take care of the rest of our bills and all our needs...
But my God shall supply all your need, according to His riches in Glory by Christ Jesus. Phillipians 4:19

Tithing is part of the Abrahamic Covenant and thus predates the Mosaic Law.
As to making up for the missed tithes, I say it's between you and the Lord. If you are stumped, go talk to your priest / rabbi / pastor / etc.

well in the bible it says that you should give ten percent of your profits to the church or give what you can. if you honestly didn't have tithing to give those last 2 times its ok. theres nothing wrong in not being able to give tithe. when you are able to give then give if not god knows your heart and it is all good. god doesnt keep a tally of how many times you give he doesn't expect you to have a payment plan or back pay.just pray about it. he has a plan for you. i hope this helps

Pay the money you missed and let the Lord open the windows of heaven upon you. If you are a regular tithe payer you have had this happen to you already, if you haven't then its now time to prove to yourself he will.

Tithing, the giving of 10 percent of your wordly goods (in modern times most ministers just say give 10 percent of your income, but in the Bible it is very broad and includes your goods..for example, if you own a collection of art, give some of the art as part of your tithe) is one part of the equation; offerings, or vows, are the other.
You can make a vow to Jesus Christ...that when you are out of your tight financial situation, you will honor His Name and pay xx amount to him.
In the Book of Malachi, God tells us that we rob Him when we fail to pay tithes and offerings, because He is the one who gives us the power to get wealth.
Most people today are irreverent to the Lord and are not very charitable to Him.
And remember to serve the poor...help the poor.
"You who have done something for the least of these (the poor) have done it for me," as Jesus said.
