Thanks for all the replies. Now, are there any expenses that may come up as far as supplies or equipment needed to participate in certain activities? For example, would I need ANY camping gear for camping that some families may already own?

Enter your zip code to find the council near you. You will also find a list of packs in your area. Visit two or three and then decide which one you want to join. You can ask them what the costs are while you visit. Scouting is a great way to share an activity with your son.
Generally, the registration fee is $10/year
Boys life (optional) $10/year (magazine for youth that promotes reading, and activities for boys)
Uniform shirt $22
patches for shirt $4-6
neckerchief $5
belt $6
hat $9
book (must have) $4.50
shorts/pants $22
sox $4
Wait on the uniform; the pack may have some used uniforms available, or you can pick one up from eBay for less than half cost.
pack/den dues around $5/month or $60/year for awards, crafts.
You will be requested to make a snack once in a while
If you go to day camp, ~$60

Here it's £1 per week, and we pay weekly so no need to find it up front. And the uniform can be found cheaply new or secondhand on ebay (it's quite expensive new in the shops).
Are you in the UK? If so, he's too young to be a cub scout. You need to find a Beaver pack (that's for boys 6-7).

Most of the time you pay a 1st time fee ours in PA is $12 then if the troop is doing good they cover the cost for the yearly fee. camping trips depend on how much money is raised in fundraisers you can contact the BSA and they could give you the prices and contact info!!! it's a great program good choice

That depends, first there is the cost to actually join, and then there are usually weekly dues which are determined by the troop/pack itself.

just went to sign my kid up....$130.....for registration an dues....seems like a lot...I hike with him all the time for free...not sure what I'm getting for this kind of money.
