The Mayans didn't necessarily believe that the world would end December 12, 2012. They created an extremely advanced calendar that has successfully predicted astronimcal events. They choose to stop their calendar on this date. This will be a Winter Solstice. This is also the event that they referred to as The Sacred Tree. The Sun will line up with the Galactic Equator, in other words the center of our galaxy, the Milky Way. Science has proven that this will infact occur at this time. That doesn't necessarily mean that the world is going to end. There are several theories about what might occur--everything from nothing to the axis of the Earth shifting. (Before anyone jumps all over this question, keep in mind this came from a twelve year old!)
Anyway, I think they just thought it was a convenient place to stop the calendar.
Edit:
December is the month of the Winter Solstice, which was very important to their calendar.
Similarly 2012 is the end of one of their cycles.

The mayans didn't believe that.. their calendar simply stops on that date. Considering how long it took to create that in their time, it's amazing they went as far out into the future as they did.
